Do good manners matter to people at large anymore?

I hadn't planned to write this one. Yet here as I am traveling by Metro, there is an elderly person with a small child. They have not got a seat. There are many young people sitting. Nobody has shown the courtesy to offer them a seat. I could have intervened but at times, I feel that good manners and behavior should come from within. What are people becoming now? Generosity, empathy - are they dying or dead? And then many claim themselves to be righteous! What do you think?

Hmm...have seen such things happening. But then have experienced other way round too. So agree with Judy Story's comment too. You could have intervened in a polite way.

@arunima25 I have intervened a few times but somehow I was observing if someone would bother. Luckily a seat got empty after sometime and both the elderly person and the boy got to sit. There were around 4 to 5 males aged between 20 and 40 and nobody bothered. Not a good sign.

I think mostly here people aren't too bad when it comes to giving up their seats for others but in other ways good manners seem to be slipping by the wayside.

@JudyEv In fact, the point about seat is just one. There are multiple instances.

I feel there is a commercial angle to this. Whenever the demand is high and very less service provider there is indifference. I can give example. Indigo has the highest market share in domestic flight service in India. Just because it has hardly any competition the staff are very rude. If an old person requires more foot space, the flight crew tells that nothing can be done. The idea is if they are cordial then also passengers will ride the flight, if not, then also passengers till ride the flight

@sathviksouvik Not a good behavior by the Indigo staff. They should be more polite, no matter whether they are the best or not.

@sathviksouvik Very bad experience indeed ! I sometimes think may be now a days, there are too many flights and different Airlines staff could be over worked in many ways.

Ask and you shall receive. Every individual is comfortable in his or her own orbit. How long did this person stand by the way?

I agree, the youth lacks manners. I'm always willing to help the elderly or disabled

I think many people are so self-absorbed that they are oblivious to common courtesy.

@dgobucks226 Yes that also looked like the possibility in this case.
