Every Fall, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, goats are brought in to munch away at the grassy areas that border many of our freeways and larger surface streets. I keeps the local fire danger down, and I am sure it makes the goats happy. I see big friendly dogs among the goats. I suppose they are there to herd and protect them Do you have similar programs where you live?

They also use the goats to keep the public areas clean here. They do a great job and do not want to be paid.

@TheHorse - They move the goats where the grass should not grow, between the tiles of the pavements and so on. I was very tempted to buy a small goat when we had the garden.

That is so smart. It's also a lot of goats. I love goats. Have you seen the ones that faint?

There are people in Oregon and Washington that "rent" their goats out to eat down blackberry bushes, grass and more. Most do it for free to feed their animals. It's amazing how fast they can eat an area down.

You could not pay me to eat down blackberry bushes. Unless the thorns get soft by the time I was hired. The most beautiful and lush blackberry bushes I have ever seen were on a trail next to a big waterfall East of Portland. Is it called Multnomah? Or something like that? My Senior Brain cannot remember.

@TheHorse It's crazy how goats, deer and elk can eat on those bushes and not get stuck. Multnomah Falls is gorgeous! It's right off the I-84 east of Portland like you mentioned. I've been by a few times. The bushes are very invasive and all over the PNW.

That seems a good thing to do let them graze ang make the grass shorter and easier to maintain. That also mean free labor for grass cutters to pay. Just a bunch of goats to eat them and eventually make the soil fertilized from the goat poops too.

Not any programs as such. Yet people in High Mountain passes migrate with their herds - Sheep and Goats to lower reaches during winters and then to higher reaches during the summers. I do not think there is any "official" program as such. By the way, there seem to be a very large number of the grazing animals !

No, we don't have any areas large enough for that sort of thing. I did read before about a herd of goats that were hired out to eat invasive wisteria in CA.

@TheHorse In certain areas. We don't have a big wildfire risk.

This makes a lot more sense than constant mowing. More people need to do this, and it needs to be implemented in many other places.
