1978 - Magic
Magic is a psychological horror drama directed by Richard Attenborough and adapted from a novel of the same name by William Goldman.
Charles "Corky" Withers (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is an unsuccessful magician. His mentor, Merlin (E. J. Andre), tells Corky that he needs a new "hook". Corky changes his act to include a ventriloquist dummy, foul-mouthed Fats. Over time Corky and Fats become a huge success.
Corky's manager, Ben Greene (Burgess Meredith), is working on a deal in which Corky will have his own TV show. Corky takes off for his hometown in the Catskills because the network requires a medical exam; and he is afraid they will discover that he has severe mental issues. Due to his mental state, Corky has been having difficulties controlling Fats.
In the Catskills Corky rents a cabin which turns out to be run by his high school crush, Peggy Ann Snow (Ann-Margret). Peggy Ann is unhappy in her marriage to Duke (Ed Lauter), and Corky wants to strike up a romance with Peggy Ann...but Fats will have none of it.
This is a very creepy and well-done movie; and Sir Anthony is brilliant as usual. It's one of my favorite films.

Never seen it, but it sounds like the plot of Devil Doll, a really bad movie that they riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000 once.

@LindaOHio — he’s so good at the “psychological thriller” role. Wayyy back in 1968 he was in an episode of Department S, where he played a scientist who was sick of society so he was going to drop his nerve gas on London.

I watched a movie- Lady in the Porch or something like that.. The editing was really good and actors did well but I felt the ending was unsatisfactory!!

Sir Anthony Hopkins has been in so many good movies. I didn't care for this one as puppets and dummies give me the willies. I had forgotten Ann-Margaret was in it.
