Dancing Across the USA

Yesterday I watched an old movie that is great for the laughs, “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” and a very young Chevy Chase. In fact, all the actors in the movie rolled back the years. I love watching this for the sheer lunacy of a family taking an incredibly long journey from Chicago to Los Angeles just to visit a fun park, in this case the fictitious Wally World. Of course, families travel long distances to enjoy fun parks like Disney World, but they fly the Griswolds were driving. Clark Griswold, portrayed by Chevy Chase, is the kind of family man that could and will drive you simply bonkers. However, his heart is in the right place, and he does love his family; he just shows it in the oddest ways. What happens to them along the way is a laugh riot, even when Aunt Edna, played by Imogene Coco, dies in their car. What’s funny about death? They take her and strap her to the baggage rack because no one wants a dead body in the car. Anyway, I highly recommend you to watch this old movie if you have never seen it. I watch it now and then when I need the laughs. As with any movie that you’ve seen at least twice, you forget certain things, like the great scenes with Christie Brinkley. Also the closing song, which I discovered I really liked and have included here, is “Dancing Across the USA,” and you know what? I still feel good enough and young enough to want to dance across the USA, but who will dance with me? The song and scenes from the movie

My kids watched that movie so many times that I could probably recite the words by heart. I do have to say that we watch Christmas Vacation every year, my sons both say it’s tradition!

When I went to the Grand Canyon a couple of months ago I told my brother I was going to Griswold (where they stare at it for three seconds then leave). I love Lindsey Buckingham’s “Holiday Road” from that movie, too.
