1984 - Gremlins For those of you that want to avoid the gore, this could be just the movie for you. Gremlins is a black comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus. Executive Producer was Steven Spielberg. The budget was $11 million and box office receipts were an impressive $212.9 million. Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) goes to Chinatown to purchase a Christmas present for his son, Billy (Zach Galligan). Randall finds a small, furry creature called a mogwai (voiced by Howie Mandel) in an an antique shop. The owner refuses to sell the mogwai to Randall; but his grandson secretly does. He tells Randall that there are three strict rules: do not expose the mogwai to bright light, especially sunlight which could kill it, don't let it get wet and never feed it after midnight. Randall gives the mogwai to Billy; and Billy names it Gizmo. Soon all three rules have been broken and the movie turns violent and comedic. The film also stars Phoebe Cates, Polly Holliday, Judge Reinhold, Corey Feldman and Jackie Joseph. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I saw Gremlins a little too young, and had a few nightmares. It’s a great movie though, and I do love Polly Holliday.

It was better than I thought. I thought it might be too juvenile; but it wasn't.

Huh?? One I’ve seen??? Hoyt Axton and Polly Holliday were great in this. And Gizmo was so cute.

Forever and a day I have always been reluctant to call this one a horror movie. It has the elements, but it's not really a scary movie at all, and isn't even one made to induce any real fear factor. It's a great movie and well done, and certainly is a timeless classic, but is it REALLY horror. I remain on the fence.

@LindaOHio Kind of like saying Goonies was a horror movie. Nah, I don't think it was.

I thought it might be too juvenile; but it had enough violence that it wasn't.
