Kid's and Eating

When I was growing up my mother had us try different foods, but only the ones she liked (she was and still is very picky). But if we didn't like it we didn't have to eat it. We ate what we liked. It was my grandparents home that we all lived in. My grandmother and mother cooked the meals and made enough that everyone liked! For example, lets say they made roast beef, which we all liked along with the mashed potatoes and biscuits. But as a child I preferred corn as a vegetable, some people liked green beans (which I prefer now!) But they made two vegetable's. My son's didn't like anything that was green, lol I had them try them but they didn't like! They are in their forties now and still........ NO GREENS! All of my grandkids get the same treatment. One of my grandson's is 6 years old. Until he was almost two I didn't see him much. He would eat almost everything my daughter said, then he started being picky. Now we live in the same home and I was told by a person that it is my fult that he is a picky eater because I only make him eat what he likes! I told that person that it would make no sense for me to force him to eat what he doesn't like and then he get's sick at the stomach. Then perhaps have to go buy medicine for his upset stomach! I was told ,"Oh that won't happen" What do you think?

Funny about not liking green ones. I think there is always a happy medium and a lot of ways to get kids to eat something Everyone has their favorites, but it is also something to say we can't always have them. My person opinion would be to have them eat a little and never overwhelm their plate with a lot of something you know that they don't like. It might be a good idea to talk to them (age appropriately of course) about foods that may not taste good but that are good for us i.e., vegetables and some meats. Ask them how they want to proceed. Eat a little or just pass on them entirely. Sometimes a little bribery might come into play too. As adults I don't think we should make faces or be picky Infront of kids too. Just my opinion.

I think your opinion is correct, no we don't make faces and stuff in front of the kids. We give him stuff to try and then try again later. However this one person makes him eat it anyway no matter if he likes it or not.

@dfollin ........I think it's rather mean to make a child eat something. Have them try it but not force them.

I think we have to try our best to get kids to try everything, but once they get into their teenaged years, they’ve pretty much made up their minds no matter what we do.

When our daughter was young we did not have a ton of money. I am sure she didn't like it sometimes but we were glad to have any food to put on the table. She ate what we adults ate- didn't eat it then she would miss a meal. I know that sounds mean but we adults were doing our best to raise a healthy kid.

@sallypup That was what my parents did. You ate what they served, and if you didn’t like it you didn’t eat. I thought that was fair, especially since there wasn’t money for more.

@AmbiePam We were able to get cheap eggs back then. I believe that to this day grownup daughter gripes about our meals. Very often breakfast would be the night before's meal scrambled into eggs. Maybe weird but we ate.

I hink that as we age we train our taste buds. Plus some foods are better of worse depending on how they are cooked. When I was small, my mother´s maid overcooked all veggies. They turned horrible. I started to like veggies when we went to the US when I was 11 and my mom cooked everything.

Yeah! As I said I only liked corn as a child, but then I started liking carrots. As a child I liked raw carrots then I started liking them cooked. Teenage years thru adult years I started liking various kinds, first broccoli then green beans. Green beans is my favorite now! I LOVE Green Bean Casserole!!!!!!

@dfollin When I was a child, I hated cauliflower. But it was always overcooked. I now cook it al dente and serve in with homemade mayo with garlic. Delicious!

I think kids should be encouraged to try all kinds of foods. I was an extremely picky eater when I was young; but now I eat almost anything.

I'm fine with kids not being forced to eat something they don't like. My parents weren't like that. They always forced me and my brother to eat something we didn't like.

@dfollin It's okay. I think a lot of parents here have been like that. I've had a son for 23 years, but I've never forced him to eat something he doesn't like.

Just re-read my teenage diaries a few days ago and learned I spent years critiquing my mother’s dinners like a moody food blogger. Pages of drama about lumpy mash and “suspicious stew.” Today I’d happily eat that “terrible” shepherd’s pie.

Many children are fussy about their food.In fact, the more variety we have in our food, the better it is for our health.

As long as they try different foods, that's probably as much as you can wish for.

I believe in giving children a range of foods , they will work out what they like or not.

That is what I think too, but I was told that I was wrong to let him choose what he likes and dislikes. That he is a picky eater because I let him choose what he likes or dislikes!
