Today was bloodwork day, which means next week is mammogram and check-up time. My chest is already starting to hurt.
That’s okay, I’ll just dance my blues (and the pain) away. Here’s today’s song to help anyone get up and boogie!
Land of 1,000 Dances - Wilson Pickett
Wilson Pickett is buried here in Louisville. He’s in the chapel mausoleum. I didn’t know that until we had my dear aunt of blessed memory’s service there.
He wasn’t born here, he didn’t die here, and I don’t know that he lived here for any length of time. Furthermore, Louisville isn’t exactly the hub of 60s soul music.
Whatever, in his lifetime, Pickett rocked the house, big time. “In the Midnight Hour,” “Mustang Sally,” and “634 5789 (Soulville, USA)” could just as easily be here as this song.
This was written by and originally a hit for Chris Kenner. His version, in 1962, did regionally well. Two years later, Cannibal and the Headhunters covered it and did better. Then, in 1966, Pickett recorded it and set the standard. His version was his biggest chart hit.
Brighten up your Thursday with some sweet soul music from Wicked Wilson!

Did you have to do the dances as they were named in the song, or could you just dance any old thing to it?

Knowing how to pony was big. His sound I recall very well. Rocked the house indeed.

@FourWalls .........I think all it is stamping your feet like a horse to the beat and slapping your side every once in a while.

Love that 60s soul. I have no clue how to do the pony. I’ll go find it on YouTube.

Another one I didn't know by the title. I used to love to do all the dances he sings about. Great song.
