Would you pay more for an autographed book?

Melania Trump’s memoir in hardcover is sold for $40. On her website there is a signed hardcover of her memoir being sold for $150. I am assuming it’s exactly the same book and it’s just autographed inside. That’s $110 more for a person to spend just to have it autographed. I wonder if any other authors ever do such a thing? That is charge a lot more for a book simply because they autographed it. Would you pay a lot more for the same book just to have the author’s autograph in it? And how much more would you pay? I’m not sure I would. Especially not when the price is increased by as much as Melania’s memoir. It just doesn’t make sense. I’d rather put that money toward something else.

No, I wouldn't. I wouldn't notice something that small anyway. If the book is good, I'll read it. It has to be real good if I'm spending any money on it.

@lovebuglena I don't read often, and I'd need to find an audio version. I do have access to the libery of congress though.

No I wouldn't, especially since authors sign their books at book signings and don't charge extra. Maybe I should charge extra for a signed copy of my book? lolololololol

I wonder if any other authors do that. Come to think of it, I think this new girl that I follow on Instagram (with millions of followers) that is selling her poetry books on her website charges more for signed copies. And I think the unsigned copies are also higher in price than on Amazon.

She prices all of her stuff very high. If she was someone I would want a book by I still wouldn't pay that amount for it. I can think of a lot of gifts I could buy for poor kids with that amount of money. If I did want an autographed copy, I'd go to a book signing where I could get it for free or at least much less.

My husband gifted me her collector’s edition of the memoir. It costs $250. If he actually paid that much he’s crazy.

$40 for a memoir is not bad actually. $150 is for sure, signature or not.

Slightly more over the price I’d think about it. Way higher I’d pass.

Nope, I would not pay for that or anyone else for that matter. Some of them over price these books like they wrote them. I write my own material and I wouldn't even charge that much.

I wonder how many celebrities actually write their own books…

@lovebuglena Not many; they get ghostwriters. About 60% write their own books; it is very small. They don't have a precise number, but yeah, it is very small.

Maybe. If it really meant something to me personally. Otherwise, what's the point, really? Most people who look at autographed things are like, "How neat." No one really cares. lol I mean, what's an autograph really worth? It's not like if you walked up to someone famous who autographed something for you he'd be like, "Lena. Great to see you. How have you been?"

Unless maybe it’s a collector’s book it’s a waste to pay a lot more just for a signature. And the way some sign you can’t even tell whose signature it is unless you’ve seen it before and know what it looks like and who it’s from. Like say Trump. If you’ve never seen his signature you won’t be able to make out that it’s Donald Trump. I think Melania’s is the same way. Hubby gifted me her collectors edition memoir. It’s different than the regular hardcover. With it comes an envelope and in it a piece of paper with Melania’s signature. I found out the cost of this book was $250. I couldn’t believe he spent that much on the book.

@lovebuglena But even if it is meant to be a "collector's item," its value will depend on how many of said item are out there. The less rare something is, the less valuable it is, and the longer it will take to become rare enough to have any value. But I know what you mean.

I would never pay even a dime more for an autographed book than a regular copy.
