Side Effects of Medication

I was talking to my dad today, and I mentioned the side effects of medication. He started talking about Gabapentin (Neurontin), a medication I took twenty years ago that did nothing. He said when his wife was taking it he thought she was getting dementia. He wondered, “Surely God wouldn’t give me TWO wives with dementia (my late mother was diagnosed with it at the age of 46). My stepmom also doesn’t have a family history (my mom did). On a hunch, he asked her to stop the Gabapentin, and she went back to normal. What is the worst side effect from a medication you have ever had?

My oldest daughter had a major spinal surgery and still has a lot of pain and disability. The doctor gave her gab for nerve pain and it made her foggy and no control. She refuses it now.

I had no idea the horrible side effects it had back when I was on it. And I really hope your daughter can heal. I seriously doubt my spine surgery was as serious as your daughter’s, and mine was bad enough. I can’t imagine her pain.

@AmbiePam Thank you. Hers was paralyzing her and she is still in PT and a wheel chair. Still has a lot of drop foot, fire needle type of pain and tremmors. Surgery was in March with over 38 screws. Good news is she was able to take a few steps. I hope you are healing.

@AmbiePam - I immediately changed my doctor, you cannot trust someone who does not check your problems before giving medications.

The worst side effect from a medication that I had was hypothermia. It was scary. I wasn’t aware that it could happen.

I stopped all meds for fibromyalgia cause all of them caused me to be woozy and out of it. I could have fallen. I told one Doc that I tend toward low blood pressure. She gave me diuretics to help my swollen legs even though that messes with the blood pressure. So yup, got super dizzy and almost passed out. All she could say was for me to drink lots of water to curb the side effects.

The medication they first gave me when I broke my arm made me constipated …..I was warned ….but no one could have told me just how bad it would get …..I had to have another set of medication to reverse this situation.

My Aunt Lana has a terrible back problem, but every single pain medication makes her constipated. Because her bones are too brittle for surgery, she just suffers.

In fact, by taking the medication, my father's muscles became weak, and I stopped taking it a year ago. But because it was too late, it took so long to recover.

Thankfully, with all of the different medications I take and have taken, I haven't had any side effects (or they haven't been strong enough side effects to notice.

I had an antibiotic that put me in a foggy state. I stopped it real fast. Another one gave me extreme mood swings.

That is very disturbing to read about your medication side effects. I don't think I've had any serious side effects from any medication I'm on but I do make sure to check the side effects if 'I'm prescribed something. There are so many t commercials on tv for medications for every single thing and the side effects are scary.

I avoid taking medicines precisely because of the side effects. I don't like adding to what is already ailing me. Glad your stepmom is doing better now.

I had bronchitis and took Biaxin. I was sicker from the med than I was from the bronchitis. I couldn't eat, I spent all day in bed; and at one point, on the way back from the bathroom, I passed out. Terrible stuff.

Messed up digestive enzymes along with body aches and pains, and itching and a rash and general topical sorenesss. My brother takes or did take gabapentin, and my younger sister took it for the pain associated with cancer. Brother does not notice any side effects for him but for Holly, my sister, it made her pain worse.

I took an antidepressant once that interfered with my BP meds. It caused a slight arythmia and I ended up in the hospital. I hadn't been eating much that day. I think I only had coffee and a small sweet roll. I think that contributed to it

A doctor gave me Gabapentin a couple of months ago and when Oscar (my ex SIL doctor) came to see me after I fell he told me to stop taking it immediatly. So there it is, in a drawer. He also told me to stop taking Celecoxib.

Now I am glad that I am not on any medication. I do remember way back when I was still at university in NYC I had a very bad bout with the flu and the doc had me on strong antibiotics. When I no longer had any temp I told mom I was going back to class and she said hold off a few more days because i had all those antibiotics in my system and she was right I stood up and everything went black and I fell back onto the bed and was lucky I did not pass out on the street somewhere,

I can't believe that a medication would cause dementia. Your father is a smart man. I don't take any medication.
