A very neat ant nest

All sorts of things in the natural world interest me and I spotted this ant nest while we were camping at Baladjie Rock. It seems the leaves are brought to the nest by the ants as the trees that have these types of leaves are not so close by that the leaves could get there through being blown by the wind. It’s a very neat nest. I’d love to know more about the inhabitants and how they create such a home.

@DaddyEvil @porwest Excuse me, don't you read my posts? Let me reiterate - no cougars, no bears, no skunks, no bobcats, no bisons, no moose (meese? ), no rattlesnakes - I think I'll stay here, thank you.

Indeed it looked to be very neat. Wonder if there are still ants staying there?

I guess there are although we saw very few ants.

It's a neat and quite large nest. The ants are smart little animals. They stole all the blue granules I had put outside to kill the lugs. I took a video when I noticed all the granules aligned in circles and I knew I never did something like that.

@JudyEv - They had a nest and I had put the granules in circles around their nest, it took a while before they could bring everything inside.

How interesting. I wonder why they put them in circles. My Mum put some granules down their nest once then watched as they very carefully carried them all out again! lol

@JudyEv It looks like they are large ants with such a big opening. I can’t imagine being bitten by one.

I didn't like to poke a stick down it in case they were faster than I was! lol

@JudyEv among ant colonies this is probably a rich one and counts as a mansion

Those tiny creatures are impressive, and that is such an inadequate word to describe them.

We have 'sergeant ants' which give a nasty bite. If they sense you're nearby, they come out of their nest and try to get around behind you. For something so small, they're very aggressive.

I'd be careful not to disturb them. Recently, a horde of red ants attacked me. I had some little wisdom to run for my life.

I hate ants with a passion. Very interesting nest; but they give me the creepy crawlies.
