I don’t know if it’s just our state (NY) that did this but an inflation refund check just came in the mail. It’s only $400 but it is still a nice amount to get. I definitely didn’t expect it.
The check is made out to hubby and me. I guess that means that both of us have to sign the check to be able to deposit it. His name is first in the pay to field so I wonder if only he can deposit the check. I was hoping I’d be able to do that. I guess my best bet would be to go to my bank and find out.

It’s in NY state but perhaps other states are doing it as well. Only eligible people get it.

@lovebuglena Interesting. Would Kitty count as a wife? She's pretty labor-intensive.

I haven't seen or heard anything about inflation refund checks. I wouldn't mind getting one!
When it comes to deposits, most banks don't have rigid standards in place about who needs to be the one making the deposit. You're giving them money, so you could probably be a homeless person off the street and they'd probably still accept the deposit (even though ultimately it's your money). But if you were trying to withdraw that money instead of depositing it, well you would need 6 forms of identification, your right arm, first-born child, a lien on your bank loan, and a partridge in a pear tree before they would even think about giving you the money! lol

Yeah. Depositing is definitely easier than withdrawing.

Both of you have to sign as far as I know.

The checks the government sends out always comes with a caveat, especially if it is a "inflation refund check." It ADDS to inflation, which makes it sort of moronic when you think about it. lol
I'd still cash it, of course, despite the dilemma you are sort of in in doing so.
As for cashing the check, you should be able to do so with a single endorsement so long as you are both attached to the account.

@porwest What you are saying makes sense. Now if I were to deposit the check to a joint account we’d probably need both signatures as well, right?

The check is made out to both of us but I was planning on depositing it to my account and then transferring to the joint one, or maybe even just withdrawing the money from my account once check clears.

@lovebuglena Not sure exactly how that works, but if you try to deposit it to an individual account, they will probably require the other person on the check to endorse it. It is a two-party check, meaning it MUST be endorsed by both parties to be deposited into an individual account.
If you do it this way, I think you are going to run into trouble, and probably should. Because if I were the second party on a two-party check, I could probably sue the bank, or you, for the half I never endorsed or received.
If Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk were on the check and only Elon cashed it and deposited it into his account, who's to assure Jeff got his money he was entitled to based on who the check was written out to? And how can we rely on Elon to be faithful and give Jeff his half?
Any bank in its right mind would deny the deposit.

What a nice surprise. This time of year, it's always nice to have some extra $$s. Does the check say 'and' or 'or'? 'And ' I think would mean you both have to sign it. Or means either of you could. That is how it has been in my experience anyway.

@lovebuglena .......Then you both probably have to sign. Enjoy it any which way.
