1962 - Carnival of Souls
Carnival of Souls is a psychological horror film directed by Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford from a story by Clifford and Harvey. The movie was shot for a budget of $33,000.
The story takes place in Kansas. Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) is riding in a car with two other women. They get challenged to a road race by some men; and the men nudge them off a bridge and into the water. Three hours later Mary emerges with no recollection of how she survived.
Mary moves to Salt Lake City after accepting a job as a church organist. Mary is drawn to a pavilion in an old, abandoned carnival on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Mary begins to see a ghoul/zombie (played by director Harvey).
The premise of this movie is very confusing; and it leaves you to draw your own conclusions. Some consider this to be an art film rather than a horror movie; and I tend to agree. The only really scary parts are the unexpected appearances of the ghoul. There is a surprise ending which leads to more confusion about the story line. The movie is available for free on YouTube.

I don't like nebulous things going on in movies and ones that aren't very scary.

I don't like movies that leave you to figure out what the heck is going on.

That's not much of a budget for a movie. An art film, huh? That's a far cry from a thriller. Interesting. Sounds like a movie I could miss.

A budget of $33,000? Heck, my car cost that much!
Nope, haven’t seen it. Of course not. R.E.M. parodied the movie title in the title of their song “Carnival of Sorts (Boxcar).” That’s as close as I can get.

And the director played the ghoul to save money.

This is a movie I never heard of and probably wouldn't be one I'd be inclined to watch.
