How do you prepare for getting older?

I don’t mean money, although that is essential, but in other ways. My dad and his wife had saved for awhile, and recently renovated their guest bathroom. They put a grab bar in that bathroom, after having put one in their own bathroom a couple of years ago. Neither has mobility or balance issues at 70 and 71, but, of course, no one ever knows when that will change. I was glad they did that. In addition, after the renovation of the guest bathroom there are no longer any bathtubs. No chance of problems of getting in or out. It’s a little thing. I noticed with myself, I quit wearing significant heels. I never wore stilettos or anything, but even though I’m tall, if cute shoes had heels, I didn’t care. Now, nothing over two inches. What about you guys?

I do have balance issues at 62 years old and we installed two grab bars in our tub/shower so I can grab if I get dizzy. We also have a waterproof stool in the tub in case I need to sit down. I usually do sit down now when rinsing my hair. Pretty was looking for government grants to add a wooden back porch/steps and railing at our back door. But that stopped once trump went into office. Our back porch/steps now are concrete with a steep gradient. I've fallen down them once and don't go out the back door anymore. Our front porch doesn't have railings, either but it's only a few steps up to the top of the porch and I can lean on the outside of the porch for balance. (I fell up the front steps once and skinned my knees so I'm really careful going into the house now.)

I didn’t know grants had ever been given out for that, but it’s a great idea. Yeah, I can see why no railings would be a very big problem.

@DaddyEvil After a tornado hit her then area, Diana got a grant for a tornado shelter at her home. Funny enough, she got it around the time she got engaged to my dad. Even though she was going to move, she went ahead and put it in. Here, and maybe where you live, that helps sell a house. When she married and moved in with my dad, she wanted him to put in a tornado shelter. Now, my dad pays all the bills, but he wouldn’t put in a shelter. He said she could do it, but she’d have to pay for it. It’s the only thing he’s ever made her pay for!

@AmbiePam Home Improvement grants used to be fairly easy to get for older adults and Pretty always fills stuff out in my name. You can use grants for anything in the category they're issued for.

I am about your Dad's age. I love our grab bars. Two in the bottom shower and one by each toilet. Pride means nothing when you fall and are lying on a hard floor and can't move. When we had the bottom bathroom done over we took the low tub out and put in a shower. We also put a chair height toilet in- don't know why the original toilet was so low. We do have stairs and for me that is insanity. We also have a hide a bed in my downstairs study so if age snags us we can sleep down there.

Yes, my dad also put a grab bar by the toilet, and got a “taller” toilet. I’m afraid of falling, and I’m just forty-four. I’ve lost my balance a couple of time recently, and landed hard. I can’t imagine how that affects the bones of someone older.

Well, nothing at the moment..but I am sure I will. Honestly, although it is pretty here especially this time of the year..I do want to move before I get too old for various reasons, one being..these steep, hard stairs are no good for an old person..I can't imagine hoofing up and down these everyday when I am 80.

Yes, the stairs do sound like a serious issue.

I didn't, it just happened. A lot quicker than I thought it would. Seriously, once I paid the house off the first thing I did was get a walk-in bathtub. I didn't have serious issues, and still don't, but I know they can show up before I know it.

@ambiepam At retirement when I was 66 we downsized to a bungalow with a walk-in shower. I also only do work in the garden in 15 minute bursts. Grab rails will be next I suppose, definitely before we need them.

Those are wise decisions. My dad is still trying to get his wife to quit working in the garden so long. It gets so hot, and she just doesn’t take breaks.

@AmbiePam Gardening involves a lot of bending and lifting. Done correctly it’s not so much of a problem, but does anything correctly?! I think my 15 minute rule is good. I rest for 30 minutes then do another 15 if I feel like it.

Two inches!?! Jeez, back in the days when I wore "heels" they were an inch or less, and they were never "stiletto-y"

Honestly, I HAD to wear heels in my teen years. I wear size 11 1/2 shoe, and the only shoes either had heels or were orthopedics. And you know I wasn’t wearing orthopedics as a teen. But I have never ever been able to wear the skinny heels; it has to be a block heel.

Old age just came and knocked me for a loop, However, if all goes well I am only 16 just tell the the old bat in the mirror to go away, I still love my favorite music and that takes me back and I jsut don't think about it,

We put in walk in showers a few years ago and that's a great help. With this back issue, I use one of those grabber sticks to keep from bending over as much. Poor Dale does just about all the housework. Getting old's a pain, literally. We don't drive at night now. Thanksgiving will be a relatively small meal, just four of us. But still lots to praise God for...many blessings.

Absolutely. I miss having a big family Thanksgiving, but as long as we have a few with us, that’s something to be very thankful for. Too many are all alone.

I haven't really worn anything with much of a heel since I was in my 20s, and even then I never did often. My main plan for old age is to build up a good store of interesting memories so if/when I am stuck in a chair at least I will have interesting things to think about

I don’t tend to wear heels very often. I haven’t really thought about the changes as I get older…..maybe it’s about time I did though !
