Roller Coasters

Last weekend, for my daughter's birthday, we spent a long 4-day weekend in Tampa, Florida, kicking off the celebrations on Friday with a visit to Busch Gardens Tampa. I have to preface this discussion with the fact that everyone in my family is roller coaster junkies. And living in Florida, we have easy driving access to over 60 roller coasters, ten of them in Busch Gardens alone.
My daughter, gf and I drove to Tampa from Gainesville, about a 2 hour drive. My son drove from south Florida, about a 4 hour drive. We met at Busch Gardens at 9:30am, for the 10:00am opening. It was a gorgeous, cool day, with not a cloud in the sky. A perfect day for visiting a theme park. And for some unknown reason, Busch Gardens was an absolute ghost town that particular Friday. We had the entire park to ourselves, and never once throughout the day did we have to wait in any line whatsoever. So we rode roller coasters. All of them. Over and over dozens of times each. I've never ridden so many roller coasters so many times in my life before. It was amazing!
Busch Gardens has a new roller coaster called Iron Gwazi, which we rode first. It instantly became my new favorite coaster. It is currently America's tallest and the world's fastest and steepest hybrid coaster. It is 206 feet tall with a 91-degree drop, and reaches speeds up to 76 mph. I wish I had taken a picture to show you, but unfortunately I was just too blown away by this coaster to stop and take a photo.
Instead, I have included a photo of my second favorite coaster, Sheikra. Sheikra is a dive coaster second in intensity only to Iron Gwazi. Sheikra is 200 feet tall, has a 90-degree drop, and reaches speeds of 70 mph. What makes this coaster unique is that as soon as the ride vehicle crests the ascent and just about begins the descent on the 90-degree drop, they stop it and hold you there for about 10 seconds, so that you are looking straight down like you are about to fall to your death. And then you plunge down the 90-degree drop and the fun begins!
How about you? Are you fans of roller coasters?
The photo shows the ride vehicle at the top of Sheikra just about to round the top and dangle for a few seconds before dropping. Looks scare, don't you think? I insist on sitting in the front row every time I ride this roller coaster.

When I was younger (and smaller/lighter) I LOVED riding roller coasters! Now, I'm too large/heavy to fit in the seats on the roller coasters around here.
Pretty and I used to go to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Six Flags Over St Louis and to Silver Dollar City in Branson to ride the different roller coasters.

@AmbiePam Silver Dollar City was a tradition in our school for the senior class party until my class... I don't even remember what our class did. We were all disappointed that we weren't allowed to go to SDC for our senior trip.

Glad you enjoyed all those roller coaster, I am scared o heights you I never get on one. Sometimes that has spoiled my visits to amusement parks if they have mostly coasters and nothing tame for me to ride,

Busch Gardens Tampa has a coaster that you may enjoy, if you can get past the height thing at the very beginning, It's called Cheetah Hunt, and it's a very long roller coaster (almost a mile long) that generally stays low to the ground. The height at the beginning is just to give the coaster enough speed to travel that mile length of track.

I am a fan of roller coasters to an extent. I once went to our local amusement park called Frontier City. They had a roller coaster named The Wildcat, and it actually gave me whiplash. They ended up closing it a couple of months later due to other people complaining about the same thing.
We’re going to Disneyland next Friday, and my nieces and nephew are so excited. They love roller coasters!
Did you hear Six Flags was closing? Sad.

I did hear Six Flags was closing. Many people have been saying for a while that their theme parks were going downhill, so I knew it was only a matter of time until they either folded, or somebody bought them out.
So, interesting story on ownership of Busch Gardens and Sea World. Both BG and SW were owned by Anheuser-Busch, but when Sea World started having financial trouble due to their mistreatment of whales in captivity, AB sold the theme parks to an investment fund called Blackstone. And then years later, Blackstone sold all the theme parks to a group called United Theme Parks, which ironically was formerly Sea World. So in essence, the theme park that caused Anheuser-Busch to sell ultimately became the theme park that gobbled up all the ownership.

@AmbiePam I don't really care who owns them, as long as they keep them open and keep them looking good.
Sea World Orlando has been in the news lately, because a woman is suing them for an injury she sustained on one of their roller coasters. She got hit in the face by a duck that flew into her, knocking her unconscious. She is suing the park because she said it's their fault they built the coaster too close to water. Um....this is Florida, there is literally water everywhere!

Going to an amusement park when it's uncrowded is a dream . . . very rare here if it happens at all anymore. Lucky you guys! Now that is some crazy drop . . . me in my younger days would have loved it. Now I'm a wimp
. . . well, I'd still go on it, but I'm not a big ride seeker like I used to be
. You all probably keep your hands/arms up

I did keep my arms up on every roller coaster, and I'm paying for it this week. My shoulders and back are still killing me! lol

@wolfgirl569 I agree. And not just with roller coasters. I've dated many girls who were way out of me league, simply because some liquid encouragement got me to ask them out.

I used to ride a roller coaster named The Zephyr which was at a local amusement park in New Orleans which was closed around 1979 for a building in the university campus,

Why wouldn't you ride them now?
And I thought you were younger!
