Can you text your doctor?

The last two primary care medical providers I had/have (nurse practitioners) let you text them when you have questions or requests. It seems they respond even faster to that than calling to leave a message or going through their online portal. I wish all my doctors did that. How do you contact your doctor, and is that the way you would most prefer?

I've been avoiding doctors. The most remote way I can deal with them is a telehealth appointment.

I know you have, and a few of us worry about that. But a telehealth appointment is always better than nothing if it’s necessary.

Not text, but there’s an easy, secure messaging system to reach them in both in the VA and my “civilian” doctor. I had a telehealth appointment with my psychologist last week, and that was wonderful! I have a follow-up scheduled in February, and hopefully that’ll take place on a beach in Florida! (Well, it can be in person if she wants to join me. )

We can contact our doctor by e-mail, no text messages. We can contact our pharmacy through WhatsApp.

I never asked to do this. I send messages through the portal and mine answers quickly. If it's urgent and can't wait too long, I can call and get transferred through.

I was surprised when this was offered as an option, and even encouraged to do it over calling.

@AmbiePam My portal sends messages and if urgent, I press something for it. Today, I received tests from both doctors immediately after done, before my doctor gets them. I like it. I have used texting for my kitty's vet before she passed away. Never a doctor.

Thankfully I don't remember when was the first time I visited a doctor. I'm fit and have no problem. However I often take my uncle to our doctor. Here you don't need to take appointment , at least in my town.

That’s really good. With my doctor you can also just walk in, but I like to make an appointment just in case they are really busy.

@AmbiePam I have never taken appointment from my doctor. They are always busy. Still they check every patient who visits him. I can understand why you text them. You don't want to waste your time in the clinic. You are right. I visit them them whenever I need, perhaps because I'm not as busy as you. If I were you, I would do the same.

I guess you can contact their secretary or nurse but not the doctors themselves since l can imagine if they allow that they’ll surely be inundated with calls and texts from their patients which can surely be overwhelming for them to attend to since they do have their rounds at the hospitals and their clinic then their private time too.

No, but I have a medical web page account where I can keep up with my appointments, results from tests and it includes a way to pay bills online.

Our doctor runs his own practice which consists of maybe 10 doctors so you have to ring the surgery to get appointments, etc. Occasionally they might let you talk to him on the phone.

I contact my cardiologist via telephone. However, if I want my medications, I use e mails to ask for the medications.

I don't have a smartphone and prefer to leave a message on the portal.

if its emergency, i would call him once, but when he did not pick the call, that means he is busy. So i just message him.

It depends on what I need of them. In some situations a message is enough but some others need an appointnment.

I usually call and leave a message for them. Never really thought about what I'd prefer.

My doctor's office sends me texts all the time, reminding me about appointments and "check-in" times that are always half an hour too early but I can't send a text back. Their phone numbers are call only and talk to a nurse and leave a message. Pretty can text with nurses at her doctor's office but can't text the doctor, either.

Doctors are always available here. Visit them and you will get checked up within half an hour.
