Calm After The Storm?

In my part of the island yes , but the same cannot be said for some of the other parishes on the island where cat 5 Melissa wreaked havoc. Imagine being caught in a situation and there is nowhere to run. ! Lots of tourists were here in Jamaica too when Melissa decided to do her thing - at least they were housed (hotels) in much more solid structures. Even though the area where l live didn't do too badly there is still no power, hopefully It should return by next week. However, it won 't be until next year before some areas see the light again. A dark Christmas lies ahead. Just letting you know that l am still alive and kicking. The most damage l suffered was flooding of the storeroom where my stock of dolls are stored. A big thank you to all of the mylot members who expressed concern for the country , my well being and others. We are indeed a real family here. Thank you.

That is really good news that you are safe. I'm sorry about the dolls. Are they items you sell or do you collect them?

@Kandae11 Thanks for telling me. Do you make the dolls yourself? I have an idea I've asked this before but I hope it was a long time ago and you won't mind me asking again.

They are my stock for the winter tourist season. I sell to the gift shops. Of course some gift shops got damaged too but most of them should be up and running before the season gets underway.

@Kandae11 - Another user from your Island said they had confusing warnings but where he was it was not too bad, except flooding.

Thank you. I am glad to be here - didn't seem that would be possible a little over a week ago. I wasn't even sure which part of the island would get the worst of it.

Glad you checked in...I started a discussion about you, since I was concerned. Sorry you are still without power, but it could have been worse I guess.

Yes it could have been worse . Still haven't heard from my brother who lives in a distant parish - badly damaged - but not the worst. Thank you for the interest you showed in my well being.

It is a huge task ahead. I guess for some people it is like living in a war zone.

@Kandae11 I remember what it was like here when the tornado ripped up the countryside around our city. We still had water but nothing else worked. It wasn't fun.

Where l live did not get the worst of it, so we got power back two weeks after. Unfortunately some will be without until February next year.

Oh my gosh I can’t even imagine the destruction for some areas to now see power until next year. A week for you would be hard enough. I am glad you are okay though.

@Kandae11 Oh yes, that was a mighty hurricane storm for sure! It's so hard to believe many still do not believe climate change is for real . . . no matter what, serious changes in the earth are definitely happening!

Thank you. This has been the strongest hurricane to ever hit the island - blame it on climate change.

@Kandae11 You are welcome since my relatives and myself have had to deal with hurricanes striking Lake Charles in the past. It was harsh being at home without any electricity for about a month.

Thank you. I am glad my area did not get the worst of it, but up to hours before it hit l wasn't sure of its direction ,so l must say the experience was very, very nerve wracking.

I am glad to read your post, Kandase. It's good to know you are OK. I am very sorry you still have no power. So, so much devastation, etc. there. The pictures on television show so much damage, truly heartbreaking. I am so sorry, but also glad to know you are not hurt and you still have a home. Take good care!

Thank you. I am grateful, very grateful considering the destruction elsewhere. My only worry right now is that l have not heard from my brother who lives in a distant parish. When my mobile service returned l saw that he had tried to make contact 3 days after the storm - since then, nothing.

So glad to hear that you are OK and didn't suffer too much damage. That must be a terrifying experience and I have seen some of the pictures, hard to imagine how people will get back to normal after that. I regularly donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee and the Red Cross so I hope some of that assistance is heading your way.

Yes indeed, the island isn't that large, so even areas far away from where the eye landed would still feel the effects. Thank you.
