Extra toes on our puppy

I noticed yesterday one of our puppies has an extra toe in a weird spot on the back feet. That one happens to be the only one I know the name of. It has a dot on its head and my little one named it pickles. No word from the plumber still. My husband, my father and my husbands friend were working on the plumbing to the well yesterday. No luck. My husband bought new pipes and is going to try to fix it with them today. It’s now been 8 days without water. My little one and I showered at my daughter’s house last night and filled buckets of water at my sisters. We are very lucky we have so many people nearby we can get help from.

Poor little thing, I am sure that would not be a problem. Those are dewclaws, not attached to the bone, the vet can remove them.

@LadyDuck yeah these are very floppy there’s definitely no bone in them. It’s in a weird spot doesn’t look like any dew claw I’ve ever seen before and sticks off the back feet in an odd way.

I always thought you could tie off the toe, and it would fall off. Being without water that long must be miserable.

@AmbiePam on a lot of things I don’t so who knows . He has had dogs all his life his family bred beagels so he definitely would be a lot more experienced then I am. I just think it would be better to do it now then to have to worry about it getting ripped off down the road or someone paying at a vet to have them removed.

@AmbiePam you can and I mentioned it to my husband but he said the mom dogs sister has the same thing and it’s never caused any problems so I think he wants to just leave them be.

Are you talking about dew claws? I've heard of those. Pickles, huh? That's cute. I hope you get something done about your plumbing soon.

@celticeagle dew claws look different and are usually on the front feet. This appears to be Polydactyly and is genetic. The mother dogs sister has the same thing my husband said.

I hope your hubby can get the water fixed today. That's a long time to be without water in the house. Polydactyly on the back feet is usually okay but if the toe seems to snag on things or is causing the puppy pain, a vet can remove the extra toe(s) without much trouble. She named the puppy Pickles? Your little girl is a hoot!

@Daddyevil she has a favorite one that is the ugliest in the litter . I told my husband he could tie a string around those toes now and they would fall off. He said the mom dad’s sister has had them her whole life and it’s been no problem. I worry they will get ripped off while running through all the brush while hunting but he has a point.

@shaggin Kids do some really funny things. If other dogs in the family haven't had a problem, then the puppy probably won't, either.

That's where the dew claw would be. But it's bigger. Hope the water gets fixed today

Yeah, you are lucky. Otherwise you would have to be hauling water in.

@snowy22315 I’ve been hauling water in for 7 days. 3 are 5 gallon buckets and then I have 3 big juice jugs and 2 smaller juice jugs. I fill them every night. We use that for washing dishes and flushing toilets. It would be way worse if we had no where to go shower. We have been skipping showers every other night to not burden people so much.

@jstory07 I’m losing hope. Someone is supposed to come this morning to give us an estimate on how much it would cost to have a meter pit put in and lines run to our house. Then my husband would have come connect the pluming inside our house. I’m hopeful if we go this route we can have town water within a few days. It’s been 10 days now without water.

I've heard of dewdaws but have never actually seen one. I love the name Pickles Yes you are lucky to have so many people around to help but being without water for that long has to be hard.

@Marilynda1225 the dew class I’ve seen on the front paws look nothing like these weird things that stick out on these puppies back feet . It has been frustrating. A guy came to look at the well today he can’t work on it as what needs to be done goes against his liability insurance. So our option is my husband can pull everything back up and check for leaks, lower the pipes so they aren’t the angle they are then put in a submersible pump, have a new well drilled or connect to town water. We are going the town water route which will cost us $2000 up front then just a monthly cost based on how much we use. We should have water by Monday at the latest I hope.

The toes are interesting. I'm sorry you don't have water. I fill up my fresh tank in the trailer but not going to by December if we are still in them. Being without water is very hard. I hope your well is fixed soon.

@noni1959 the well guy was unable to touch our well. The things were against his liability insurance. A man has been here all day digging up the ground and putting a meter pit in so by the latest tomorrow we should have town water.

@noni1959 as of yesterday at 4pm we finally did. Some things are leaking now from how high the pressure is of the town water. My husband needs to get a thing to put in to turn the pressure down. Hopefully he can get one after work on Monday.
