Alas Poor Iguanas

Central and Southern Florida residents are under a "falling iguana watch." On Tuesday, Nov. 11, temperatures dropped to the 30s and 40s in Florida, causing iguanas to fall out of trees. The iguanas are temporarily paralyzed by the cold weather but are not dead. My apartment feels frigid, but I have a space heater, and I would not mind sharing my bed with at least a dozen iguanas all cozying up and staying warm.

Some residents collect the fallen iguanas and, since they aren't a native species, harvest them as food. I wouldn't mind trying iguana meat.

@DaddyEvil nope that is just cruel I would rather see them alive and well. I would collect them and bring them home to warm up but I don't know what they eat or how they poop.

@RasmaSandra Bringing them home would be a bad idea. Iguanas that warm up in a house can attack the person trying to help them. They don't know you're trying to help them and they can cause injuries. Eating animals isn't cruel, it's part of nature.

I have read that they are invasive and are spreading rapidly so this seems like a great time to catch them!

@RasmaSandra I know, it's the difference between seeing the group, and seeing individuals. It's the same with any animals and people too.

Yes, they are considered a pest; and they are shooting them by the hundreds. I love animals; but the iguanas are causing property damage, etc.

I saw that on the news. Fortunately, they say they will wake up as the temps warm. Afraid it's gonna be a long winter for the iguanas.

@snowy22315 those in the photo seem to look doopey thinking like how did they get there when they were in a tree.

FIW! Falling Iguana Warning!!! You know, I don't remember them ever warning us of that when I lived there. Different times, though...no 24-hour TV stations to cover weather including falling iguanas.

@RasmaSandra — “they” say it doesn’t hurt them at all…then again, “they” aren’t the ones falling, are they!

@FourWalls if I lived where these iguanas are falling I would go out with an umbrella perhaps givng them a softer landing than right splat to the ground,

I am a big animal lover; but the iguanas are taking over Florida and causing damage to property, etc. They hire people to come and shoot them because there are so many. Since they are an invasive species, they have become a major problem.

@LindaOHio that can be taken care of by catching a lot at one time and placing them in places they would be happy like the Everglades and keep doing this, I could be wrong though I guess no one cares to really save them,

It happens every winter in Florida. I wonder how they ended up there - they belong in countries where the weather is warm all year.
