I know all these. I think a shepherds pie is topped with tomato slices and a cottage pie isn't but maybe one is mutton and the other beef. You'll have to enlighten me.

I have never seen a shepherd's pie or cottage pie topped with anything other than mashed potatoes.

@Traceyjayne Okay, thanks for that.

Shepherds pie is made with lamb, cottage pie is made with beef. Neither have tomato on the top , just mashed pitato.

I think that Ovaltine is what we call here Ovomaltine. I do not know what is Horlicks. Shepherd's pie uses ground lamb, while cottage pie uses ground beef.

@Traceyjayne So Horlicks is not too different from Ovomaltine. They make Ovomaltine tablets now.

Yes, I would say those drinks are the same. Horlicks is a drink made from malt. It comes in a powder and you add milk and hot water. They make Horlicks tablets too .

yes to all except cool box and Alice band. I did a full year at Lancaster University. I always use examples of how even though we use the same language words can have different meanings--boot, bonnet, pissed, buzzard, chips, f@gs, etc.

Buzzard, pissed ? Cool box is a plastic box that you put an ice pack in and your frozen or refrigerated goods and they stay cool / frozen Alice band ….hair band ….a plastic or fabric band /that goes on the top of your head, pulling the hair back off the face.

Alice band is new to me. I really don't know the difference between a shepherds pie and cottage pie.

Shepherds look after sheep so lamb goes in a shepherds pie. Cottage pie is made with beef. Alice band is just a hair and, one that goes across the head not one that you tie your hair back with

Ovaltine is a brand that used to be big here in the 70s and 80s but has pretty much been replaced by things like Nesquik and Hershey's. Chocolate eclairs are popular in the doughnut shops. The only trifle I know of is when someone is being petty. Pork pies are something I don't see much of, but we do have pot pies—mostly chicken and beef. Flasks are common for people sneaking booze into venues where drinks are more expensive. Here, if I am reading it right, a cool box is simply called a cooler. Don't know what Horlicks is. Kebabs are done on the grill a lot here. Crocs are a brand of ridiculous looking rubber shoes. Not sure what an Alice band is. As for shepherd's pie and cottage pie, we know that shepherd's pie is technically with lamb and cottage pie is technically with beef, but to us, we call anything with meat and mashed potatoes on top made into a casserole a shepherd's pie.

Pot pies are different. A pork pie is made with a hot crust pastry casing with pork meat inside , a hole made on the top and a jelly ( gelatine Mix added ). Flasks for sneaking drinks are hip flasks here. A flask will keep cold things cold and hot thing hot. A trifle is a dessert….jelly ( jello ) topped with blancmange topped with custard topped with whipped cream. Also sometimes includes fruits or sponges in the bottom layer. Horlicks is a malt drink …made with milk, served hot.

@Traceyjayne See, for keeping things hot or cold we use a "Thermos," although that's technically a brand, not a thing. A flake is a weird person or a crispy thing like a corn flake or peeling paint. Or dandruff. Oh yeah, and there's that jelly/jello thing. Jelly is a sugar-based fruit flavored spread and Jell-O is a brand of gelatin.

I know what most of those things are. Ovelteen you'll be hard pressed to find. It was very popular in the late 80's and through the 90's. It's old....
