A Morning Surprise

A few mornings ago, as I was sitting in my kitchen enjoying a cup of hot coffee, I heard a very loud and distinct cry of a bird of prey. And VERY close. I immediately jumped up, went out the French doors to my back patio, and saw a magnificent bald eagle perched on a log a few feet away. I ran back in, grabbed my phone, and raced back outside to try and capture a photo. I was so worried the eagle would take off before I got back outside, but it was still there when I returned. Just sitting there and being all majestic. I got as close as I could without scaring it off, and was able to get a few pictures before it finally flew away. I was in complete shock, because I've never seen a bald eagle in my area before. I was also excited to know that one was living somewhere nearby, or at least visiting. I'm really hoping that there is a mate somewhere and that they are nesting, since this is the time of year the females lay eggs. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled at high trees, poles and towers in the area to see if I can spot a nest. Once threatened and facing possible extinction, American bald eagles have rebounded nicely due to protection under the Endangered Species Act, and are thriving today. Alaska has the largest population of eagles, approximately 30,000 nesting pairs, followed by Minnesota at 9,800 nesting pairs, and Florida with approximately 1,500 nesting pairs. Have you ever seen an American bald eagle before? They are such beautiful birds, and a fitting designation as our nation's official bird.

I have seen one a few times in my life. Never locally. But certainly in my travels. I always marvel at just how big these things are. They make turkeys look like hummingbirds. One of the most majestic, beautiful birds on the planet. I'd have loved to have had one make a visit in my yard.

It definitely gave me chills seeing it so close up. And you are right, they are huge birds! Unfortunately, I haven’t seen it since it made its brief appearance in my backyard.

@porwest It was really special to see one! I was giddy with excitement. In the past, it was always exciting to spot a bear here in Florida, but now their population numbers have exploded so you see them everywhere now.

@moffittjc Being that you rarely see one, I think it makes seeing one more special.

Only on t.v. and photos. Didn't know they could survive in Florida's unpridictable climent.

What a very handsome bird. Perhap a message of some kind to you. Never saw one in person. In out garden in Latvia we were surprised by a very large gull, Usually they stay by the Baltic Sea area or the Daugava River which is not too close to us, We took photos and later the gull flew away and about half hour after that we knew that the gull was sending the message that there was a big storm brewing at sea and it had flown inland,

That would have been surprising seeing a full so far inland.

I was lucky that I have a camera with terrific zoom capabilities, so even though I wasn't very close to the eagle at all, it looks like I was in the photo.

Very cool! A bald eagle pooped on my husband when we visited the west coast. It's supposed to be good luck. Still waiting for that.

Never in a million years would I consider getting pooped on a sign of good luck!

Yes, I've seen several of them in a rehabilitation sanctuary near here. Sometimes they get shot by accident (although those people, when found, were still found criminally negligent.) and are brought to the sanctuary until they're well and can fly free again. You're so lucky to have seen one that close and gotten photos of it!

When I lived in Southern Illinois, I lived rurally and often had eagles. They liked to sit on the roof of the outbuilding and look for food. I was surrounded by farm fields and they dive bombed the field mice. I see them up here where I live quite often as well, several lakes are close by and they visit here. There are some nests along the Sangamon River as well. Maybe you will see your eagle again soon!!
