Do you know any interrupters?

We have a new "hay boss" in the Lessons area. She is young (25) and enthusiastic, but she is an interrupter. The other day a bunch of us were talking when the subject of Walter White came up. She said I'd make a good Walter White for Halloween. I tried to tell her that I use Walter as my avatar on one of the writing sites I enjoy. By the time I had uttered maybe four words she interrupted with something non-related to the conversation. She does this often, alas. Sigh. Do you know interrupters? Are some interrupters also know-it-alls? .

I am not fond of interrupters. At the same time. there is a lonesome lady in our writer's group who would and does easily dominate the entire meeting IF one of us doesn't verbally step into her monologue. Being social sometimes is very difficult and kind of smelly.

How do the others in the group deal with her?

@TheHorse It depends. The youngest is quite unsure of herself. I think she would just let the woman roll over her if others didn't climb in for a word or two sometimes.

Sounds like she isn't a person that cares about the reasoning behind conversation. Human interaction. No wonder she is the boss. Those types usually are in those positions. I was married to an interrupter and I would interrupt too. Just trying to get my side of it heard. He was quite a dramatic debater.

Most interrupters are also know-it-alls, you cannot finish a phrase and they have to jump in because they know more!

@TheHorse I remember Venn diagrams. Good way to represent the interrupters in your mind.

@LadyDuck I wonder if there's a website where you can"make your own Venn diagram." Maybe I'll check.

Yeppers. Do you remember Venn diagrams? In my mind I see two heavily overlapping circles.

Yes, absolutely people who interrupt are also quite often a know it all. I don’t like to hang out with people like that, and thankfully, no one close to me is like that. There used to be a guy in our church though, when someone asked what time it was, he’d interrupt and tell you how to make a clock. No one is sad he changed churches.

Sounds like a fella who "needed to be heard." Was he lacking in other social skills?

Most interrupters are know-it-alls. And they are no fun. However, I think those people who finish your sentences are worse. They have already decided what you are going to say and know they are going to say as well. And often they are wrong. And sometimes I change where I was going just to mess with them.

@TheHorse I had a couple of friends who did that. I would see them start and then I'd stop to see what they said... As a very shy person, who people don't believe me now, but anytime I didn't talk I was reasonably happy.

I do the same "No, that is not what I was going to say. May I finish?"

Some are really only interested in what they have to say. They've never learnt to listen to others.

Which means they never learn. Gaining new information can be powerful.

I know a few who try to dominate interactions and laugh aloud at their own jokes - most of which are not funny. I take care to such an extent I find it tough to get a word in. However I wonder at times how some attract attention despite having not much to say.

My husband used to get livid and call me an interrupter when in actuality I would interject or ask a question. His stories could go on for 10 minutes; and sometimes I had a comment or wanted to ask a question. He would get so angry.

Asking a relevant question is considered "good listening."
