I was in the right place at the right time.

Lately, I am learning that the 'unusual' is becoming the norm around here.
It's windy here. The wind started last night and it's the kind of wind that takes your breath away...knocks things over, uproots trees, peels shingles off of rooftops. Of course, I had to take the son to the treatment center this morning. We started off in a wildly gusty wind; I literally had to fight the car to keep it from blowing sideways. NOT fun.
And then the return trip...
I was not on the interstate on the way home, as there are several flipped semi-trucks and traffic is backed way, way up. I took our 4-lane state highway, which luckily is usually not as busy. People tend not to take it because the speed limit is 55MPH, not 70MPH. (Not that many people actually pay attention to speed limits!) but I was staying away from the interstate. Anyway...there ended up being a lot of traffic on that highway, as well. It was my understanding that some traffic was being routed through a country road to the smaller highway. Lots and lots of trucks...and they were going way too fast for 60MPH winds! One roared around me super close, and it was rocking, they can do that in high winds, especially when they are empty. About 2 minutes after it passed me (luckily it was in the right lane and didn't land on another vehicle! ) It BLEW OVER!!! Luckily I was several lengths behind and was able to stop. But it blew over on it's side, and landed half in the highway, the road shoulder, and the ditch. Two fellows in a pick-up truck stopped and ran to the truck and got the driver out. It wasn't on fire, thank goodness--in that wind, fire would have been terrible! We had to wait for state police, sheriff, and two ambulances showed up. They did take the driver, but he looked ok. The fellows in the pick-up had put him in the cab of their truck until help came.
He was driving way, way too fast--at least 75MPH in a 55MPH zone. He didn't save any time, and he's lucky he's alive and didn't kill anybody.
So, that's my morning! Let's hope there is no more drama today. I had the shakes watching that semi-truck just fall over! I forgot to take a picture, but I usually don't like to post about accidents on any local pages, so I am out of the habit.
Have a SAFE and happy holiday, for those who are celebrating!

@MarieCoyle @AmbiePam as a learner one piece of advice I always remember was 'Assume everyone else is an idiot'.

Yes, it does! And a lot of our safety is up to us, to watch out for the other guy! Yes, he was going way, way too fast. We were not in danger as I was staying back since the truck was literally rocking in the wind. I do have to say it was terrible watching it fall over. It shook the ground!!

OMI goodness that is scary as heck. I get nervous with too much traffic, and something like that would freak me out badly.

I am not fond of bumper-to-bumper traffic, especially at high speeds. When it comes to that type of traffic, I tend to take the road less traveled!

@MarieCoyle IT was super trafficy in Charlottesville the other day. The students and some if the staff from UVA should be away for break as well. However, whoever was off appeared to e just on the streets..plus someone opened a Porsche dealership and others along tHat route. Nothing like easing the congestion.

The traffic today when we drove the 25 miles to my daughter's wasn't bad, but it was Thanksgiving and most people were already starting their holiday. But this evening, the traffic was pretty bad, everyone going home. And we have a snowstorm coming, I hope people that drove somewhere for the holiday get home safely before the roads get too terrible.

After the truck fell over in the wind, my son said he was very glad it didn't do it when it passed us a few seconds earlier! I have to agree.

@MarieCoyle They are also on impossible deadlines to be able to rest like they are supposed and drive the correct speeds. I have an uncle who drove and he often complained that the times seemed figured for having 2 drivers so they didn't need to stop for sleep.

I am sure that his company will get a full report. Truck drivers are hard to come by, I often think many of them do not have enough experience and now we have way more semi accidents than we ever have before.

Yes, they do have hard deadliines. They are overly pressured much of the time, which puts everyone in danger.

Thank you, Linda. I did hear on our nightly news that he was OK. There were several more trucks blown over that same day in that area.
I hope your Thanksgiving was a good one, Linda.

@MarieCoyle - Too many look at their phones while driving.

@MarieCoyle - It's even forbidden to talk using a hands-free device if there is heavy traffic. I know that this is incredibly distracting, but people do not care. My niece had a small accident years ago and she was using a hands free device.

I wish they would be more careful. So many accidents could be avoided, and so many lives spared.

It was scary, thinking about how close we were when the truck blew over.

Well, I bet you truly will be giving thanks! That was lucky for you. We had a similar experience some years ago. We were in northern Greece, driving on some very winding roads in the mountains, and there were some crazy drivers around. We stopped to take a photo of the scenery and a lorry loaded with cables went shooting past. A couple of minutes later we rounded a bend and there was the same lorry with the back half on its side

Oh, wow! That's a bad mess for sure. Some people just think they can go as fast as they want to, and put other lives in danger.

We never really know what makes some of these people do what they do, but he certainly was going way, way too fast.

That wind was bone-chilling and just took a person's breath away. Thank you so much!

@MarieCoyle Eh, just send them to Iowa. I found drivers to be largely respectful and courteous there.

Ok, will do. I would seriously love for some of them to be driving somewhere else.

. They need to thank their lucky stars when everyone comes out ok. Thank goodness you stayed safe
