Yeppers, I was sent home with some turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and canned cranberry on Thursday night. Some green beans too. I will be having lots of turkey for the next day or two. Have you heard about the "great Thanksgiving controversy"? Do think it's the tryptophan (which gets converted into melatonin) that makes us sleepy on Thanksgiving? Or is it the fact that we've just eaten tons of carbohydrates? Or both? I dunno. Anyway, are you having a bit of extra turkey in your diet for a couple of days?

It could be both or 1 reason. I hope that you enjoy your food. Not too much insight but feeling sleepy on Thanksgiving could be not so easy to explain.

I used to be an avid Mythbusters fan when I was younger. They determined it was the tryptophan. And who could argue with such experts? I have some extra ham, stuffing, and green bean casserole, but I ate the turkey for dinner last night.

Tday leftovers ! I know about the tryptophan, but I don't think I was feeling it this year. I was too tired to notice . Yep - lots of turkey stuff. I roasted 2 turkeys for 2 separate meals this year - my mom got the bulk from the first meal .

@TheHorse Oh yes. She's got a platter of turkey and fixings to eat on her own time . . . but the main part was turkey vegetable soup. She's having a teeth procedure and can't eat well . . . so we all had a Tday soup meal with her .

Nope other than some turkey sliders we weren't offered any for the road.

What is a slider? I thought that was what happened in the morning when you had greasy food the day before.

I have not heard about "great Thanksgiving controversy", but I am sure that the fullness from eating a large meal is the primary cause of post-meal drowsiness. It happened at my parents house after the Christmas meal and we never had turkey.

Scientists say it is the very full bellies that make people sleepy after a large Thanksgiving meal. The tryptophan isn't enough to cause sleepiness. We always make lots of foods using leftover turkey after Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. I just made scrambled eggs with smoked turkey diced up in them along with onions, garlic and spices for late lunch. Pretty asked me to dice more deboned turkey, onions and bell peppers to make turkey noodle soup for supper late tonight. (I have 9 quart bags of deboned turkey in the freezer now. Some of it will get eaten between now and Christmas but most of it will be kept for different meals into the new year. )

I LOVE Thanksgiving leftovers. They say it's the tryptophan....all I know is I go into a food coma after a lot of turkey and sides. I have enough left for another meal.
