A punnet of pumpkin plants

We pulled out some parsley plants yesterday. They were well past their best and it was time to get new ones. I also bought a punnet of butternut pumpkin seedlings, two of which you can see in the photo. Vince also bought a punnet of basil which Vince uses in his recipes from time to time. It’s nice having fresh herbs to use and I’m hoping I’ll get lots of butternuts from my pumpkin plants. They’re known as butternut squash in America, I think. Hopefully I’ll have enough to give some away to friends. Although they keep well, the produce from six plants will hopefully be a LOT of pumpkins. Two years back, I bought a miniature butternut plant but it didn’t do well at all.

Do you know that you can let the parsley grow and flower and use the root to make soups? I miss having fresh herbs from the garden.

@JudyEv It's good, you can find several recipes online to make creamy parsley root soups.

We did notice that the root was very substantial. I didn't know about making soup from them.

They do look good at the moment. They need to get through the high temperatures we're expecting over the next few days.

I like fresh herbs when I can get them for my cooking, too. We used to have basil and thyme in pots on the front porch along with green onions/bunch onions. (I'd cut the green tops off to use in eggs, soups and stews and leave the onion itself in the ground to produce more.) Good luck with the butternut squash. (I never liked them but mom grew them all the time.)

Vince does that with garlic chives - cuts the tops off to use. He also cuts them small and freezes small quantities. Same with the parsley.

I was surprised that they're called pumpkin plants yet the result are called butternuts. I like using fresh basil too but never did well growing it. I would like to say that the picture you're using now makes you look younger than one you used before when maybe your hair was shorter.

@JudyEv are any of the varieties of pumpkin there the ones we sell as pumpkins here? I'm guessing they are all in the squash family or perhaps pumpkin family there.

@MarshaMusselman They're pumpkins. Apart from butternuts, you rarely see squash. I think there might be a spaghetti squash that you see occasionally.

We have various pumpkin varieties here - Queensland Blue, JAP, Jarrahdale and the butternut is just another one. I know they're called squash there. I like my hair long and it's been like that for a long time now. I could update my photo but I don't think I look much different.

Wish I lived closer to enjoy some of those butternut squash when you have an overload. Nothing beats fresh from the garden.
