To garden or leave it to others

In our village, there are certain benefits we all enjoy but we pay a fee for these services. One of these is gardening. The community areas are managed by outside contractors but we can do what we like with the small areas near our front doors. If we don’t want to be bothered with gardening, the contractors will look after that area too. Most of the houses have a low hedge in front of the windows. If we want, we can just have the hedge trimmed and manage the rest ourselves. The residents’ gardening committee did a survey on what people wanted and, based on the results, we now have coloured spots on the kerbing in front of our houses. We have an orange spot which tells the contract gardeners that we only want the hedge trimmed. I think green spots mean the contractors keep the area looking nice and the occupants have no input. The photo shows day lilies in my sister’s garden.

My sister has a lovely garden although now she's 88, she's finding it harder to manage.

Orange flowers are beautiful, a good system to let gardeners know what they have to do.

@JudyEv - that is a good idea, you pay more if everybody talks with them. I confiscated the phone of the gardener who came to work in our garden. He answered all calls and we paid for his time on the phone.

We've been asked not to talk to them too much as it takes away from the time they have for gardening. If we want to say anything about our gardens, we have to go through the committee which is fair enough.

@LadyDuck You were brave to do that but I see tradesmen all the time who are talking on their phones instead of getting on with their work.

I imagine you are doing the hedge work yourself.

No, we've put our names down for just the hedge to be clipped. We'll do the rest. They have the tools whereas we got rid of most of ours.

I would be happy if others do it because I really don't have a green thumb.

Some of the more infirm are very happy to hand the gardening over to others.

They're doing a great job really, although there are always a few who are never happy.

I need green space or I go nuttier than ever. We basically have a double lot. I pay a good person to come do the heavy work in the gardens now. I do a bit of digging and planting in the various higher boxes and sometimes mow but can't manage the entire property myself. Plus when the gardener lady is here I have the bonus of chatting with her. I got in quite a bit of exercise when I picked up most of the apples from our two back trees. Huge job there.

@JudyEv Agreed. But gardens bring the natural world to us. Crazy weather for me this year- there are two purple petunia blooms in a container out front right now. Freezing night temps didn't happen per usual so I am enjoying summer beauty in winter.

Gardening is good exercise but as you get older some things get beyond us.

Not everyone is able to do much physical work but it's nice if their gardens still look attractive.

Very pretty flowers. I wish I had someone to tend to my flower garden. It looks kind of shabby.

Gardens do take quite a lot of work if they're to stay looking nice.
