I just loved this story, and I hope you’ll take the time to read it. Each weekday morning a local news station has their anchors and the weather person do a “What Caught My Eye” segment. A couple of days ago, the weather person showed a story about a Texas nursing home that did a Glam Grands kind of glamour shot event. Any of the residents who wanted to participate had their hair and makeup done by professionals donating their time along with a photographer, and pretty accessories like boas or hats added to their outfits. Even a few of the men got into the fun with fake tobacco pipes, fancy canes, distinguished hankies and topcoats….
The nursing home halls were lined up with people in wheelchairs waiting to participate. They looked absolutely amazing! It just warmed my heart, and I thought, why can’t there be more like this? I know this is not the first time anyone has done this at a nursing home, but surely this can be arranged to be done more often. These residents still have minds that work just fine; their bodies just can’t quite keep up.
I sure wish I had the talent to do things like this for people others too often forget.

When my beloved aunt was in the nursing facility, they did similar things. One thing they did that was cute was a king of the month thing, and a queen of the month thing--not on the same day, and I don't ever really remember any certain couples that were king and queen together. But not many in there had spouses anymore, so that makes sense. Then they had king and queen of the year once a year. It was so fun and so special for them, they dressed up, had their hair fixed, families would come and visit, and they had a special meal and cake and ice cream. Of course, my beautiful aunt was queen several times over the years she was there, and queen of the year several times as well. I never missed being there for that. Somewhere I think I have a picture, I will have to check for it sometime.
As you say, the bodies might not be the strongest but most often the minds are fine. Aunt was a sharp lady to the end, of which I was very thankful.

That is very nice. More things should be done for these folks who get "stuck" in those homes.

I'm sure those residents were so happy to participate and of course how wonderful that those professionals were willing to donate their time.
A few years ago when my grandson was home from college for the summer, he got a job at our local nursing home. He came home with some hilarious stories and how he loved interacting with the residents.

Too often we forget about those who could use some companionship, entertainment, and fun in their lives. What a great thing to do. I'm sure the nursing home had a lot of smiling faces that day!

That is really nice, and a good rememberance for their families at Christmas too. Who wouldn't like a nice pic of grandpa and grandma?
