Lucinda is alive but someone else has her heart

I hope you’re all recovering from a joyous Christmas, if you celebrate. Soon we’ll be facing a new year with new challenges and experiences. I read an incredible story today about a young girl who had cystic fibrosis. To continue living she needed a lungs and liver transplant. However, when someone needs this operation, it is technically easier for the surgeons and less risky to the patient, to do a heart, lungs AND liver transplant at one time, which is what happened to Lucinda Winnems. A donor was found for the girl but what amazed me was that her healthy heart was given to someone else. Lucinda has gone on to marry and have a child, another unexpected bonus for her. An extra ten years of life is sometimes quoted for transplant patients but Lucinda has now had an extra 20 years of life. You can read about it here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12-27/qld-domino-transplant-lucinda-simpson-cystic-fibrosis/106127132 In the article, one of the doctors talked about the stress of a 12-hour operation starting in the evening and after a full day’s work. This struck me as not ideal at all. Anyway, it’s a nice story.

Isn't it just? Imagine the logistics to get the patients and organs ready for the operation. They might have been miles apart but perhaps they were in the same hospital.

Someone I know was in an operating room at 9 AM at 6 PM the doctor did a blood transfusion, and the surgery still continued, she was sent to the recovery room at 9 PM and was sent to her room at 12 midnight. The story was so good and I think God is so good to her.

If you read the discussion carefully, you'll see that they gave Lucinda a new heart as well as lungs and liver. Now, someone else has her original heart and she has a new one. heart, lungs AND liver transplant at one time, which is what happened to Lucinda Winnems.

It would be a strange sensation - walking around knowing that your heart is beating in someone else's chest.

They didn't think she could have a child because of all the medication she was taking but somehow the doctors were able to help and she now has a healthy little boy.

What would be the chances of finding such a donor? Second to none, I'd say.

Lucinda had great will to live a normal life. She, in turn, has given away her own heart in the process to someone else too. The doctors job in such circumstances can be quite sressful. We are making real progress when it comes to complicated surgerires with minimally invasive keyhole operations aiding minimal post operative stay at hospitals. .

That's very true. Vince had open heart surgery but you're battling to see any scars. And the lung operation involved five small incisions for cameras, etc.

So many of them don't manage to find donors.
