Helping out with DIY a few years back

This discussion has been inspired by Snowy and the fact that her son had been able to do a few ‘odd jobs’ for her. Some years ago, we visited our son in Melbourne. We travelled with our caravan so were able to take some power tools to tackle a list of things he wanted help with. The first, and seemingly biggest, job was to run a cord the length of the passageway. It needed to go behind some bookshelves which were stacked with books. Emptying those bookcases looked a very daunting task for me as there was not a lot of room to put the books anywhere else. The house our son was renting was very old and very dilapidated. The walls went in and out a bit. I suggested we throw the cord over the books and against the wall. We did this, gave the cord a bit of a shake and it fell right down to the floor. So that was the first chore taken care of in about five minutes. Sometimes there is an easy way out. The photo is of my son’s cat.

That job sounds easy enough to accomplish. When Pretty and I moved into this house, the electrical outlets were in the wrong places for our furniture so we ran extension cords with built-in power breakers in them, just in case. I tacked the cords around doorways and along the baseboards before we moved our furniture in.

That was very sensible. We were very relieved not to have to move all the books and bookcases.

I like it, California always talks about DIY Punk is based on DIY here in CaLi, The problem is it always goes back to our cities and counties. You can't be all DIY with big brother down your throat, they have conformed so many times, which is not totally bad but in the land of the wealthy its hard for anyone off the street having a shot which is what punks point was in the first place. This is the most legendary band here excepting a key to the city. We love it, but at the same time as things change to a more corporate evil. I mean level. its impossible for most people to be DIY.

Well done Judy! Often we women have more brilliant ideas to solve the problms. Your son's cat is cute.

@JudyEv - This is true, the word I hear more every day from my husband when I start doing something is "WAIT". A two minutes task always takes at least 15 minutes.

@LadyDuck At Christmas, my niece's sons were trying to put the star on top of the Christmas tree rather than just propping it against the top branches. The tallest branch wouldn't support the weight of the star. I was able to double over the branch which made it shorter and stronger and it supported the star quite easily. Again, an easy fix.

That is a lovely picture of an adorable cat. You are right. Sometimes we have an easier and quicker solution to problem that looks massive. Good that you could figure that out and it not only saved your time but also the effort. And perhaps the best solution for old house.

He was there 20 years but they have sold the house now and he has had to leave. He still has his cat and loves her dearly.

@arunima25 He hasn't had the cat all that time but she'd be 12 or 13 by now.

@JudyEv 20 years is too long. I am a bit confused. Has the cat also been there for 20 years?..that's too long life for a cat. Isn't it?

@Akutza90 It's our son's cat and her name is Snooki. He lives in Melbourne so we are a long way from him as we live in Perth.

I tell you, sometimes parents make something we adult kids think is so difficult into something so easy. The cat is adorable!

I was as surprised as the men were that it actually worked! I didn't really expect it to. I thought it would get caught on something but it fell all the way to the floor.

@JudyEv Sometimes just lightly shaking a bookcase will let things drop when needed. But glad it just fell

I nearly didn't suggest it as I didn't really think it would work either but the wall must have bowed out more than I thought.

Pretty much I have noticed that too. You just have to tackle the problems, and they work out.

It was a narrow passage with barely room to move so to find such an easy solution was pretty magic.

I thought I was done with projects except for the guest bathroom; but I was wrong. There are four things that I need to have someone come in and take care of. It's always something. Cute cat.

I thought we'd have to move dozens of books which would have taken ages.
