As that meme I saw on Facebook this morning said, it’s Mondnesday December 43rd.
I think that’s why January always seems so long…it’s almost as if this week is part of it. We’ll boogie on through the last few days of 2025 with a song that @TheHorse was fully expecting. This isn’t a dedication to him as much as it is a “he sure knows my music tastes well, doesn’t he.”
#2: Old Folks Boogie - Little Feat
And you know that you’re over the hill
When your mind makes a promise that your body can’t fill
And Paul Barrère wasn’t even thirty years old when he wrote that!
Now, to be fair, he shared co-writing credits with his father, actor Paul Bryar, who was 67 at the time…so those might be his words of wisdom instead of his son’s!
When this album came out in 1977, it got a lot of lukewarm reviews (which, in Little Feat world, means they were negative but the critics couldn’t bring themselves to say it). I love this album. So sue me.
I thought this song was funny when this album was released. That was nearly 50 years ago. It ain’t funny now.
But it IS still a great song.
Old Folks Boogie
Written by Paul Barrère and Gabriel Barrère
Recorded by Little Feat
From Time Loves a Hero, 1977
Your credit creeps to an all-time low:

I had not heard this before. I’m learning as I go, I have been surprised how many I have heard in your ‘boogie’ series!

“Mondnesday December 43rd” is painfully accurate, and I felt that in my soul. That weird stretch where the year won’t quite end really does bleed into January somehow. Old Folks Boogie is such a perfectly on-the-nose choice for pushing through it. It’s funny how a song can land one way when you’re young and hit completely different decades later. Perhaps, we understand better as we get older. That lyric about the mind and body is a little too honest now. Knowing Paul Barrère was so young when he helped write it almost makes it more impressive. Critics missing the point is pretty standard, especially with bands like Little Feat. Loving an album despite lukewarm reviews is half the fun of having strong music taste. Funny or not anymore, it’s still a fantastic song to close out the year with.

I’m weird like that, I have favorite songs that bombed as singles while not caring for the “big hit.”

Definitely! I’ve been looking at some “chair Pilates for senior citizens” videos on YouTube lately.
