Happy New Year’s Eve eve! The time is winding down for this month, this year, and this countdown. I have to give a big shout-out to Linda for suggesting songs with “boogie” in the title, although I’m pretty sure this isn’t what she imagined…especially not that Bee Gees song!
Hopefully she — and all of you who were around in the 70s — will remember this one.
Steppin’ Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight) - Dawn Featuring Tony Orlando
Yeah, I know. By the time they had the variety show they were “Tony Orlando and Dawn.” Their first big hits, “Candida” and “Knock Three Times,” were released under the name Dawn. But at least you know who I’m talking about.
This was a top ten song for them in 1974, and they had a #1 song (“He Don’t Love You [Like I Love You]”) after this. Then the TV series was canceled and the hits faded and we moved on to disco.
If you hear Tony Orlando & Dawn these days, it’s either “Knock Three Times” or “Tie a Yellow Ribbon.” They had a pretty hit-filled career. Orlando is 81 and mostly retired, although he’ll still do an oldies show or two. Telma Hawkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson, the two ladies who made up Dawn, are also still active. Hawkins made a good name for herself as an actress.
So boogie tonight, and always!

Recorded by Dawn Featuring Tony Orlando
From Dawn’s New Ragtime Follies, 1974

I'll admit, I do only associate TO&D with "Knock" and "Ribbon", so it's nice to know about the other hits. I vaguely remember the show, but I was more of a Sonny and Cher person. I was just listening to the White Zombie remake of "I'm Your Boogie Man" last night. It's a banger!

How does he sing like that? He sounds like he gargled with Draino!

Oh lordy, I almost forgot, I'll make sure Roscoe is inside tomorrow night but after that hopefully they'll just find a hiding place ..... oddly, it's been really quiet around here so far, not like in past years when the brats around here had those poppers going off all day long for at least 10 days.

Well why don’t you just go tie a yellow ribbon around ol’ George Horse?

I can understand that if they were knocking three times on your ceiling!

Yes, I recall this, but no, it's not a favorite. And you are correct, it's not a boogie thing. But the lyrics make sense...he was jilted and planning to dance his heart out to help his sadness.
