Would you be disappointed?

Okay, this is NOT about sports, and I know some of you really resent the salaries athletes get nowadays. So, I ask you, what do fossils, Toyota Tundras, and half a cow have in common? They are all gifts NFL quarterbacks gave their offensive lineman. It’s a tradition every year for Christmas, since the offensive lineman protect the quarterback, the QB buys the OL a really good gift. QBs make the most money, after all. Now, most QBs have sponsorships and don’t end up actually paying for these gifts. One QB got his OL each a Toyota Tundra, one guy got his OL off road vehicles, and one got his guys each a Rolex and a personalized luxury golf carts. They didn’t spend a dime. Good presents, right? However, two QBs actually bought their OL their gifts. One bought them half a cow (including wagyu) and a grill to go along with it. And one QB who has taken a lot of heat, got his OL, fossils. They could pick from a woolly mammoth tusk or a prehistoric bear skull. His OL said it showed their QB was a very deep thinker, but a lot of guys are like, bones?! He got them bones? I think it meant more because those two spent their own money and picked them out themselves. That being said, I’d rather have the Toyota Tundra. And boy, would that meat come in handy. What do you think? I see @FourWalls wanting the fossils.

Truth? I would not welcome any of those gifts. I don't want a gas gizzling vehicle and for sure I don't want to kill a cow to make me happy. A good gift for me would be to buy some land and donate the land to somebody like the Nature Conservancy. I know. I sound like a Yuppie Do Gooder. Oh well. Or give some money to a shelter for women or animals.

I knew you’d be bothered by the cow. Maybe I should have put a warning.

@AmbiePam I'm fine but thanks. I just have fond memories of a Jersey that I taught to walk on a halter.

@sallypup Aw, that’s so cool. We raised a cow and a bull for about six months. I got really attached to them, especially the one I named Betsy. One day they all three got out, and the police and our neighbors got involved to try to help us round them up. It was comical, and everyone was a good sport.

oooh I'd want the half cow and grill! My BIL has been buying half a cow for the past couple of years and it is amazing how much meat he gets!

I thought you might go for the cow and grill; sure you’re an excellent cook, but I think you said you wanted one of those egg grills once, and I’ve got to think the one Josh Allen got his OL was even better.

I'd want the vehicle or the half a beef, too. Pretty says we'll buy a deep freezer this year and talk to my brother about splitting a beef cow with him. It's not just buying the animal, you also have to pay for processing, too. That meat would really be handy! I wouldn't mind the fossils, either. (You can resell those and get back most of the money spent on them.) I don't care about sports or sports teams. They're making as much money as they can, as quickly as they can, just like everybody else. *shrug*

I’m with you, DE. It doesn’t bother me that they make millions. They have a skill that is in demand, and if others had the talent they might be doing it too. Plus, the damage they do to their body should be compensated well. Plus, most of them give and raise millions for charity.

I don't know anything about sports and especially nothing at all about American football except that they wear helmets and those funny padded shoulders! I admit that when I read 'offensive lineman' at first I thought you meant some sort of referee who had offended them in some way by making a controversial decision and I wondered why they would buy gifts, unless they were of the horse's-head-in-the-bed variety Once I had figured out what you really meant, I think it is a nice gesture and a personal thoughtful one would be more meaningful. The beef would be more useful to me. Not sure what I'd do with a mammoth tusk but presumably the OL had a special interest in that area?

@Fleura I’d be tempted to sell it too! But then with my luck the guy would come over and ask where I put it!

@AmbiePam Mmm, OK if they are not the OL's special interest then that makes the situation more awkward, because the gift might be valuable but if it wasn't something you really wanted then you'd be stuck with it because you wouldn't feel like you could sell it would you? At least not for a decade or so... I guess it could be a sort of investment. Glad you saw the funny side of my misinterpretation!

I had to giggle at some of this. I wonder if the recipients were all pleased with their gifts. I guess most of them at least were happy.
