Another town with a crazy name.

Earlier today, or maybe yesterday for some of us, mylotter @RasmaSandra posted about a small village in Florida named Two Egg. The name originated from the Depression era, when two boys started bartering two eggs for a cup of sugar at the local little store there. I had known of this little Florida village, and when she posted this I started thinking of towns with really strange names. There is one not far from me. Chicken Bristle, IL. Basically, a wide place in the road, located in Douglas County, IL. near Tuscola, bordering an Amish community. I can't find a population number to write about, but I can say it is really, really tiny--as they say, don't blink--you'll miss it!! There are two theories of how Chicken Bristle came to have that name. One theory is that there were known ''cock fights'' in the 1920's in that area. The Bristle part of the name supposedly came from the fact that the fighting roosters had stiff, bristly feathers. The other theory is that the area was founded by some Kentucky settlers, and they brought the name, and the cock fighting stories, with them. At any rate, it's a crazy silly name, like RasmaSandra's Two Egg, Florida. And the weird thing is, both of the names came from chicken or egg stories...hmmm...another reason to ask ''which came first, the chicken, or the egg?'' Do you know of a town near you with a crazy name? There is even a crazy song about towns with funny names in the US. And yes, Two Egg and Chicken Bristle are both mentioned!

Well, those are funny names, but at least not scary or "offensive" names. In Italy there are many cities with really weird names: Purgatorio (Purgatory), Inferno (Hell), Belsedere (Pretty Butt) and others that I prefer not to mention!

Yes, I looked up and some countries have places with extremely odd names, some that I wouldn't mention, either!

@MarieCoyle I would be embarrassed to live in a place with one of those names.

@LadyDuck When I looked up weird names for towns, one was mentioned in Austria, that is now named Fugging. It used to be called a name that started with F that was a lot more offensive but they finally changed it. I would have wanted it changed, too.

Funny that both of you wrote about towns with chicken related names, It's really interesting to hear about them and how they got their names.

Well, as I stated she did give me the idea of little towns with big names. I do think it's strange that they are both chicken related!

That's an interesting name for a town. One I grew up with near me in Wisconsin, is Embarrass. It's a small town, population 300 when I was growing up.

@MarieCoyle I wonder if it starts up here. We have that river too. I don't know if it's the same river.

We have a river called the Embarrass river that flows from my county to southern Illinois. It hooks into the Wabash River in Vincennes, IN. and eventually it's waters reach the Gulf of Mexico.

@just4him I looked it up to be sure, our Embarrass River starts here in central/north central IL and runs south for about 200 miles, and dumps into the Wabash River in Vincennes, IN. I looked yours up, it says yours is only in Wisconsin and is 98 miles long. I never knew you had one, how strange@

The population of Chicken Bristle is 6,439. Thank you for the information and the link. I can't think of any strange names except for Boring, Oregon. We went through there when we visited the west coast.

I am not doubting your research...I think that might be up for debate. It's not even an incorporated village, Honestly, when you go through there there is a sign and about 4 houses. Weird for sure.

@MarieCoyle Hmmmm I don't know. Online it said it was based on the census; but the info could be wrong.

@LindaOHio Since it is an unincorporated community, I think that might be for th entire area. It's in Douglas County, which is only about 20,000 people total.

Sounded so crazy because eggs and chicken got together I searched and this is what I found it has a small population of around 6,439 residents with a median age of 40. The area is characterized by a few homes, farmland, and natural features like thick woods and a radio tower. Despite its quirky name, Chicken Bristle is primarily rural and offers a glimpse into small-town life in central Illinois . .
