Leaving my dog out in the cold.

Like a lot of you, we are expecting a snowstorm Friday and Saturday. We have been warned snow could get up to 10 inches with sleet and ice (some places will get a foot). The last time we got an ice storm my power went out for 4 days, and I stayed with my dad because their power did not go out. Talking to me this morning, my dad first said if you need to get sick enough to go to the ER, do it today or tomorrow. And, if you’re going to send me out to get you something you need, do the same thing. I reminded him haughtily I rarely send him anywhere. I also asked if my power went out, did he want me to drive to him, or would he rather get me? He then asked what I was going to do with my dog….Huh? I know he doesn’t want a dog in house and Diana doesn’t want a dog on the couch she just bought new, but who leaves a dog in an apartment with no heat in single digit weather? Repeatedly, I asked him if he was kidding (I can’t always tell). When he wouldn’t give me a straight answer I calmly told him I would never leave my dog behind. If my dog stays in single digit temps so will I. And if you won’t let me bring my dog in weather that bad, I’ll get on Facebook and tell everyone my dad was willing to leave me and my dog with no power in freezing temps. He then started laughing and quoted a Bible verse that basically said someone who sees someone with a need they can fill, and doesn’t do it, isn’t worth much. I took that to mean he’d let my dog and I stay with him if my power went out. *He got attached to one of my dogs decades ago, when he died, he swore them off because he got so sad. Periodically, he’d let Sadie come over briefly if I stopped by until Diana bought a new couch and didn’t want a dog on it.

I can't blame Diana... I never wanted animals on my furniture. It's too hard to clean the fur/dander out of furniture and that's what sets off my allergies. I might confine Sadie to one room that doesn't have carpet. (That would be the kitchen here. But I would let you bring her with you if you needed a place to stay.) Edit to add: Pretty did just buy a vacuum that will pick up dog hair off of carpet, though. We could try it out after you and Sadie get here. (She bought it because we both shed a lot, too.)

You’re the best. Luckily, none of the rooms at my dad’s have carpet. I’m surprised at Diana though because she used to keep her daughter’s cat at her house.

@AmbiePam I have a funny to tell you... Pretty's boyfriend has gotten one of the hairless cats and found out one day last week (after he bought some glass-topped tables) that it's leaving "prints" on the tables when it sits down. He keeps complaining because he has to clean them off with Windex. Pretty keeps suggesting we can get one of those cats, too. I told her she'd be looking for a new place to stay if she brings one of those ugly things into this house.

Oh, my. No, you cannot leave a human or a pet in a freezing home with no power or heat....and I know you would never do that! I'm glad you put him on the spot. He is a wonderful Dad, but he really needs to get over it all. Pets are, and always have been, family here and I know Sadie is your family!! Pack up a little bag with what you need and food for Sadie and have it ready if you have to go. They said earlier on the news/weather channel, that people who need emergency services of any kind may have a long wait or be told that it isn't possible to reach them, if their areas are hit hard with ice, snow, or both. If Diana throws a fit about her couch, I know a nice old blanket thrown over a couch works wonders. And, it's a couch. A pet and a daughter are a lot more important than a couch!!

This may all be a moot point if we keep the power. I will pack a bag just in case though.

@AmbiePam I know, but better to be safe than sorry. IF you lose power, open your cabinets under sinks, etc. so if the power comes back on there is heat that gets in there...but of course if it's out for some time nothing is going to help for very long, unfortunately. The main thing is, that you and Sadie will be safe.

I understand the new couch. But I would still invite you to bring her. Of course here we might have to keep Patch border collie from using her as a chew toy.

Maybe she can cover it temporarily with a blanket? A couch is just material and can be replaced. That is good your dad would never leave you two in a freezing apartment.

I would NEVER leave a dog behind. I hope it doesn't come to that this weekend.

I’m thinking he’s trying to pull my leg in the end. He doesn’t want the dog over there, but he’d feel terrible if my dog and I got sick from being in the cold.

Would Diana not allow a child of yours on the couch? (I know you don't have human kids, but Sadie is your fur child.) Would Sadie obey a "don't go on the couch" order? Or hasn't anyone ever thought to put a blanket on the couch?

I hope you'd both be welcome there! Hair and such can be cleaned off furniture. Then again I've stopped worrying about little messes years ago since I have children and fur babies.

Diana can put an old blanket on her new couch as I did when my niece came to visit us with her dog and her dog was not a little thing as Sadie, but a large Golden retriever. Of course would let you and your dog stay inside.

I do hope it doesn't get to the point where you (and Sadie) have to move in with your Dad even if only for a while.

As far as I’m concerned, your dog is part of the family and so would be very welcome in my home …..( I can understand others not feeling the same ….but that’s my thoughts ….family so welcome and I could never leave them behind ).

Good that you stood your ground about not leaving your dog, and you made your values clear. I hope, the storm won’t be as bad as predicted.

Yipes. Why be so worried about a couch? Dog hair can be brushed off.

poor little dog, I do hope he can at least get some protection against the freezing cold.
