Happy Birthday! Kansas!

Kansas is 165 years old today. It was the 34th state to join the Union. For the last two weeks we have had an emphasis on the Westward Expansion of the United States, and pioneers, and Kansas history and facts. Our school librarian sets up a program for us to have different activities that pertain to Kansas for half our day. We had special guests. The High School Art Club taught our kids how to draw a cartoon style buffalo (American Bison) which is the Kansas State Mammal. We had a guest musician play for the kids. The State University did a presentation on our state amphibian, the Tiger Barred Salamander. Our PE teacher makes up pioneer games. Usually they can do it outside but this year there is too much snow on the ground. The kids were broken up into grade levels for each activity. Back at their classrooms the kids talked about other emblems and what they mean. Do all states do this kind of thing? I think we did something similar when I was a child in Oklahoma. I think we celebrated the Oklahoma Land Rush. My appointment for tomorrow is being rescheduled, again. The medicine is still delayed.

I am sure that the state of Louisiana does celebrate the anniversary of the day they became a state.

No, our schools didn't and don't do anything like that for Missouri. Something like that I would have remembered. Pretty also never mentioned anything like that when she was still in school. I have an upcoming appointment on the 5th for my nose. I fell and smacked it really hard on the kitchen counter before the snow started falling here. I keep having nose bleeds. Pretty thinks I've broken it.

I am sorry about your nose. There is a really cool Missouri rest stop, I think between Iowa and Missouri. It has a wall covered in glass mosaic of a lot of the cool things about Missouri. I think it is at Eagle's Pass.

I would not be surprised if most states and/or communities do this.

@GardenGerty We did so many activities in school, but now, they removed so many things kids need to learn about.

I think we did something like that here. I know we had a booklet once, and there were several activities related to Oklahoma history.

What a great event! Kansas was a very important stop for those cowboys driving their cattle herds from Texas. From the cow towns there the meat was transported back east. Then there was the famous lawman who protected the town citizens from outlaws like Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson. Then there is the Wizard of Oz where Kansas was home to Dorothy.

And various grades have talked about all of that, and even more.
