Why didn’t I think of it before?

Ever since we moved to this house, getting on for ten years ago, the front door has not closed properly. If we push the door shut, it stays in position but it doesn’t go quite close enough for the latch to actually click into the slot in the metal plate on the frame (I’m sure there’s a proper name for that, but I don’t know what it is).
If it’s particularly windy the door will blow open, generally followed by a swirling cloud of leaves!
In contrast when we lock the door that’s always been absolutely fine.
Both the latch (operated by the handle) and the bolt (operated by the key) go into the same long slot, and they are almost exactly the same width. I’ve thought of moving the metal plate, but it would need to be moved aside by about 1 mm which would be impossible since the screw holes would of course be in almost the same position as they currently are which means that I would just end up with bigger holes and loose screws.
On Saturday it suddenly dawned on me to try filing the metal. I knew there must be less than 1 mm of metal to remove to make it work. I got a metal file and filed the side of the slot in the door plate (a bit tedious because I could only use short strokes because of going into the hole in the frame) and also tried to file a bit off the side of the actual latch. It took a little while but the end result was a success and now it makes a satisfying click when we shut it, and it stays shut!
The only annoying thing is – why did it take me all this time to think of trying such a thing??

Congratulations!!! Smart move. I bought a new lock set for the front door; but the contractors won't do the "outside" work until the weather breaks. It's almost impossible to open the door when it's locked.

@LindaOHio It's one of those jobs that turns out to be bigger than expected.

@Fleura No and they need to dig up the wire from the post light to the house. The light goes out when it rains hard. The ground is frozen now.

“Strike plate’ is the term you are looking for I think.
It’s great you found a solution, but I would have moved the strike plate. What you need to do is fill in the existing screw holes with suitable packing material. I use match sticks. Just push in as many as needed, then move the plate to where it needs to be and screw in place.

@Fleura It does work. I’ve done it numerous times and never had an issue. Every house I’ve had, the door furniture has been badly put on, and I’ve had to sort it. Hinges too.
And you’re welcome!

@Orson_Kart Sounds like we're lucky that only one door had an issue!

Probably the same reason I didn't think of slipping a popsicle stick behind the plate of the inner door that wouldn't stay shut. Of course, I'm not in the habit of closing that door, just when I was having the back door replaced last week.

At least you DID finally think of it.
I'm glad it's working properly now.
We moved into this house 9 years ago on the 1st of November. All the doorknobs/latches need to be replaced except they're smaller than the doorknobs/latches sold here now... We've looked everywhere here for new ones that would fit the opening already cut into the doors, even online, and it looks like they don't make that size anymore. (This house was built in the 1940s or earlier.) I don't mind buying new parts and could replace them myself IF they were the same size.
I can do some stuff like that myself but can't figure out how. (Every time Pretty closes my bedroom door, she pulls the doorknob off and I have to replace it. That gets old after a while.)
