Cinnamon roll project day 2

Yesterday the Baking Club made the cinnamon filling and the frosting. Then they assembled the logs and cut them into rolls. They covered the pans and put them into the fridge to rise overnight. Today I baked them so they would be ready to be iced and enjoyed right after school. That took some creativity because they had to bake covered for 45 minutes and then uncovered for at least 15 minutes more until they were browned. The substitute teacher that was in the life skills classroom said he wasn't going to be in the room during 7th period. Obviously I wasn't going to put everything in the oven and leave it unattended. Soooo I pre-heated the oven during my lunch (5th), ate, got them in the oven for about 20 minutes, and then took them out and turned off the oven. At the very end of 7th I turned it back on, got them back in, and waited for the sub to return before going to my 8th period class. Obviously it wasn't ideal to split the baking time into 2 parts but like I said I had to get creative. There were over 20 students waiting for me when I got down there after school. The cinnamon rolls were baked but not yet browned. I increased the temperature and told the kids that they'd have to wait about 10 minutes. A couple of them couldn't but the majority stayed. When they were ready a couple of the students spread the frosting on them and then everyone served themselves. They all loved them. There were lots of big smiles. And there were none left when all was said and done. There was minimal cleanup to do. One baking dish I left in the sink because it was still hot and I didn't want to deal with trying to hand wash that. I left a note for the regular teacher (who is way extra about cleanliness) that I would be there first thing to wash the dish but my guess is that she will have already done it by the time I get into work. I would definitely do this with the group again next year if they are interested in doing so.

We love cinnamon rolls! I have promised to make some gluten-free ones for all my volunteer litter-pickers on Saturday! I didn't know you could leave them in the fridge part-way through.

This is such a great story. You can really see how much thought, effort, and care you put into making it work, even when the situation wasn’t ideal. The way you managed the baking schedule around the limitations you had was creative and responsible. What stood out to me the most was the students’ response, waiting patiently, helping spread the frosting, and enjoying the rolls together. That’s such a meaningful learning experience, not just about baking but also about teamwork and patience. The fact that every roll was gone and there were so many big smiles says everything about how successful this was. I can absolutely see why you’d want to do this again with the group next year.
