Mistaken identity

MyLotter Fleur (@Fleura) wrote about looking for a missing ‘L’ (learner’s) plate and ending up finding two as she wasn’t sure the first one she found was their own. It reminded me of a story from Vince’s childhood. When he was young, he and all the neighbouring kids would play in the street along with their dogs. One of the dogs, Kipper, was found dead. It had been hit by a car when out roaming by itself. It was buried with due ceremony and a few tears but a couple of days later, Kipper turned up alive and well. It seemed they buried someone else’s dog. I found this a bit hard to believe but I guess if it’s the same size and colour you could mistake someone else’s dog for your own. The photo is of Mopsy, our friend's dog.

Well, that's weird... unless it was another dog from the same litter as Kipper. Some littermates do look almost identical.

Some dogs do look very much like others and, in the heat of the moment, kids probably wouldn't notice any minute differences.

Oh, that's a sad one. I hope they found the right one.

The people who lost the dog would have wondered what happened to it.

I understand little kids getting two similar-looking dogs confused.

It happens, I was reading the story of someone who found her black cat hit by a car. She rushed the cat to the veterinary, and she spent more than $ 300 to save her cat. When back home she found HER cat waiting of the couch. She kept the rescued one also.

@JudyEv - I have seen the photos the two cats were identical, hard to make the difference even if you were not stressed because the cat had been hit by a car.

Oh dear. If you think your cat has been hit by a car and it's black and about the right size, you could easily get confused.

I feel bad for the owners who never knew what happened to their dog.

@JudyEv That happened to a cat of ours. She was last seen in our yard swatting at leaves falling from the trees in autumn. So cute and sweet. Next she was gone for good. We looked for her everywhere. I suppose a wild animal or hawk got her.

Yes, it would be an unexplained mystery for them.

I could believe this, if the dogs were very closely similar. I guess we rely on the pets reacting to us to help identify

I can understand it - similar size, same colour - upset kids. It would happen easily.

Hmm, that is a bit strange.

Maybe they were both black and about the same size or whatever.

It is indeed difficult if they have the same posture and cannot have their fingerprints checked.

These were two dogs so no fingerprints but if they were the same colour and the same size it would be easy to mistake one for the other.

That's sad. But after being hit it could have been harder to tell

That's true and the kids were probably upset and not paying close attention.

Oh dear, the poor dog. And of course the real owners would never know what happened to their dog.
