My pumpkins have taken off

On 10 December I wrote about planting out a punnet of butternut pumpkins. Nearly two months later and you can see how well the plants are doing. They have flowers on them but I don’t see any evidence of little fruits yet. Sometimes plants put all their energy into their foliage and forget about producing flowers and fruit. I hope that doesn’t happen here. I’m holding my breath that my efforts haven’t been wasted.

Pumpkins always develop plenty of leaves before starting sprouting flowers. Let them run.

I think one day I'll go out and find some little pumpkins hidden among the leaves. That's what usually happens.

@Ronrybs We don't 'do' Halloween. Maybe I'll have to if I have lots of pumpkins.

I’ve never considered growing pumpkins. I don’t eat them and don’t make Halloween lanterns, so no need. They made headline news here last year when farmers crops failed because of the weather. I believe they need a long hot growing season with plenty of rain. We are having plenty of rain now, but not in the summer when it was required. In fact we had a drought last year. Flooding in places now!

I've heard a bit about the flooding. If all these produce pumpkins, I'll need to give a heap away. That will give me some brownie points maybe.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a dozen pumpkins in this tiny suburban yard?

Squash are weird plants at times... I hope yours grow a lot of them for you. Mom always had butternut squash and also grew pumpkins in our garden on the farm... I will eat a small amount of raw pumpkin but absolutely dislike them cooked.

@JudyEv I don't like the mouth-feel of cooked squash or pumpkins. They taste like another vegetable when they're raw. (Kinda like a cucumber grown too close to watermelons or cantaloupes.)

I don't think I've ever had them raw but I love them cooked.

They are easy to grow. At least I've never had any trouble with them although last year I bought a miniature one which didn't do very well.
