A gift from the bride

For some years now, it’s been usual to be given a small gift at weddings. It wasn’t the thing when I got married and I think it first started with Italian weddings. At the time, we knew these gifts as ‘bonbonnieres’. Our friend’s grand-daughter got married recently and, while we weren’t invited, we were given this stubby holder which shows the couple with their dog. It even shows the tattoos on his arm. Our friend often brought between four and six grandchildren down to our property in Donnybrook and we had some fun times with them.

But what is it? Not sure what a 'stubby holder' is.

Do they call them coozies there? They open up to hold a can of drink.

The dog looks just like my childhood Labrador retriever. I am unfamiliar with small gifts at weddings, although we have a wedding in April to attend. I will be looking around for my gift

@DianneN I love how cultures are so different. Anglo-Saxons in Australia didn't know what hit them when migrants first began arriving.

When I was young, guests never got gifts unless there was an Italian family involved.

I agree, wedding favors weren’t really a “thing” years ago, or if they were, they were very simple. Now, almost every wedding has its own souvenirs for guests, and most of them are personalized with photos, pets, or little details that make them feel special and meaningful. We’ve also collected quite a few wedding souvenirs at home over the years. Every time we attend a wedding, there’s always something to take home. So far, the most unique one we’ve received was a packet of seeds, which I thought was really nice and different. At least it had meaning and was something you could actually use. But I was unsuccessful growing the seeds lol. It’s nice to see how creative couples have become when it comes to these little details.

We received seeds once and another time a little olive tree seedling. I like practical gifts.

Bomboniere in Italy are given from the newly weds to their guests and they must contain almonds covered with sugar that are called confetti.

@Fleura I have no idea why. I know that it's a very old traditions, sugared almonds for all ceremonies in Church (wedding, baptism, first communion).

That is traditional here too - sugared almonds - but I don't know why, do you?

That's cute! Here guests normally get 'wedding favours' but traditionally they were a little bag of sugared almonds - no idea why.

I'd forgotten about the sugared almonds. We got seedling trees once which was nice.

That’s a nice gift. I think it is common nowadays to have small gifts given by the new couple in their wedding.
