I knew I didn't like tattoos

One of today’s interesting news items involves tattoos and the health risk that is being linked to them. Tattoo-associated uveitis, an auto-immune problem, can lead to permanent vision loss and glaucoma, with patients requiring immunosuppressants for the rest of their lives.
While the condition is thought to be relatively rare, 40 new cases have recently been documented in Australia. For some reason, the immune system targets the eye. Early symptoms include blurred vision, light sensitivity, and pain, leading to glaucoma and permanent vision loss.
Most cases occur a year or two after having a tattoo but in one case 35 years had passed before the condition manifested itself. Twenty to thirty percent of Australians have at least one tattoo and uveitis is still considered a rare condition. However, it’s unknown how many cases might be out there that have been wrongly diagnosed.
Researchers agree the new findings are unlikely to put people off getting tattooed so they’re focussed on finding what element in the ink might be causing the problem.

I had never heard this before. I don't have any tatoos but my daughter does. I know some really like them but I just never got into it. For this not to even manifest itself until years later is rather scary.

There is no way I would get tattooed ! The ink used for tattoos contains heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium.

Many inks contain heavy metals that can cause allergic reactions and as you say, tattoos also present the risk of auto immune diseases, among other things. I have never wanted one. I have enough health problems without adding to it all!

@JudyEv I totally agree! Pretty girls ruin themselves when they go overboard with tattoos.

I think that some people don't really think it through before they get tattoos, and they have regrets. They do it at the spur of the moment, don't put much thought into it. And don't even get me started about facial tattoos, I can't help it but I just hate those.

Ody art seems to be the thing these days so I doubt tatoos are going anywhere

I'm sure you're right and so far the disease seems to be quite rare. Let's hope that's the case.

That's interesting information. At least it's a rare disease.
Pretty got a tattoo of a black lotus flower on her foot when she was 18... but, a lot of my friends have at least one tattoo if not more. I never got one.
That sounds like the same eye symptoms I have with Graves' Disease.

@JudyEv Some tattoos are very tasteful and look good on the person wearing them. Some people go way too far with them, in my opinion, of course. Pretty's tattoo looks good. It's on top of her right foot and is a black lotus flower.
I KNOW that some inks can cause real illnesses as the ink ages. Especially black ink.

I always wondered if there would be consequences with putting ink into the arm.
