If you’re old, like me, you may remember Johnny Carson’s occasional skit on The Tonight Show where he and Carol Wayne would spoof local TV stations running movies in the daytime. The skit was called “Teatime Theater,” and Carson played the host, Art Fern. Inevitably, he’d have give an ad for a company and show a map to provide directions, then he would say, “Until you come to…” He’d then open a slot on the map, revealing a fork. Then he’d conclude, “The fork in the road.” Today I went to see the fork in the road. There it is! It’s in Franklin, Kentucky, not too far from the Tennessee state line. There’s a fork in a country road, so some high school welding students decided to make a huge fork and put it there. I couldn’t help but think of Art Fern and the “Teatime Theater” and “the fork in the road” joke when I saw it. In fact, I posted that on my Facebook page, along with the movie jokes that made the skit so funny (he’d name three or four actors with similar sounding names and add an animal, then give a bogus movie title). So enjoy the fork in the road. Now, back to our movie, Carolyn Jones, Tommy Lee Jones, Dean Jones, and Alfalfa the Flying Emu in “The Man Who Dated Liberty Valance”! Here’s a Teatime Theater from YouTube (the “fork in the road” joke is at about the 8:40 mark):

“the Cutting Edge of Simpson County” knife to go with the nearby “Fork in the Road.” Photo taken by and the property of FourWalls.
It was put there in 2018. There’s a knife nearby (“The Cutting Edge of Simpson County”), which was erected in 2021.

@Ineeddentures — give someone a big spoon and they’ll want a big bowl of ice cream with it.

My late dad was a huge fan of the late Johnny Carson show when it played on Armed Forces Radio and Television (AFRTS) in Panama as well as NBC in Louisiana.

Watching Carson meant I was “growing up” because he came on at 11:30 eastern time, and my bedtime had been 10:00.

@FourWalls The Tonight Show also played on late night television on AFRTS on a tape delay basis which is also my bedtime hour.

I just saw this photo that you posted in FB. It's surely unique. Interesting meaning of that fork, it's not about food!

One of those silly colloquial words that is logically depicted! It’d be a good place for a watermelon picnic.

I DID miss this discussion! I've never seen any of the skits you're talking about, though. I'm also talking on WhatsApp so I'll watch the video later.

That's very clever - and funny. We have a lot of giant things in Australia too. I've written about some of them but we don't have a giant fork that i know of.

Usually you have these near main roads. Both this and the knife are in the middle of nowhere. I love stuff like this.

That’s really unique. Sort of reminds me of the little town of Casey,Illinois, that is now somewhat of a destination stop due to their oversized items on display.

One of my cable channels still airs Johnny Carson reruns so I know exactly what you’re talking about. And, I love the picture!

Glad you enjoyed it! Teatime Theater and the Amazing Carnac were my favorites. If you look in the reply to Jimlos, I posted a picture of the big knife that’s nearby.

Oh yeah! Thanks for this. Whenever I see a fork on the road, be it metal, plastic or bamboo, I think of the Schlassen's Cuttoff...
