Out with the old, in with the new

The Fremantle Traffic Bridge in Western Australia is closed to traffic at the moment as it is about to be demolished and replaced. The closure has brought out some interesting stories Two people at least were born on the bridge with one, Sam Mitchell, having Fremantle Traffic Bridge listed as his birthplace on the birth certificate. He was born in 2001. Maureen Smith was born on Fremantle Bridge in 1937, but two years before the current bridge was built. Eighty people were invited to board the last buses to cross the bridge. The grandfather of one family built the bridge’s brass orbs which will be included in the new structure. Once the orbs are removed, the engineers are hoping there might be plaques or time capsules in the foundation. The 86-year-old bridge will be rebuilt at a cost of $430 million. The photo, taken by Calistemon, Wikimedia Commons, is of sea containers which overlook the bridge. I'll try to add the photo later.

It is the first time I heard of someone who listed a bridge as their birthplace.

Can you see the photo now? It isn't of the bridge but overlooks the bridge.

That is where he was born so the certificate is accurate I think a time capsule idea would be great. It could even contain information about the ones born on the bridge.

Interesting about the bridge. In the US in Oregon they have what is known as the Fremantle Troll under a bridge,

Isn't that interesting? I might have to check out why it's called the Fremantle troll.

What is the purpose of the shipping containers? I like how colorful they are.

It's just meant to be decorative; an attraction for the locals and for tourists. I quite like it.

Will the old bridge be demolished or just sit there? Oh never mind. I read you said it would be demolished.

A lot of big trucks use that bridge but everything seems to be running fairly smoothly.

It's a high cost, but it's better to rebuild those old bridges. The traffic is much worse in our days and we need larger and more solid bridges.

@JudyEv - For sure they will not be happy during the time the bridge is replaced, but it will not last forever.

A lot of big trucks use this bridge. They thought it would be mayhem for a few days but people seem to be managing.

I guess they were stuck in traffic on the bridge and so were born there. Very interesting. I hope there are time capsules in the foundation, too.

It's been there a long time. I'm sure it was perfectly safe but my niece is an engineer and she rrefused to drive over it! lol

Fremantle is very pleasant to walk around. It used to be a bit seedy and dirty, but once they decided to hold the America's Cup there, they improved it a great deal.
