My neighbor said she has to move by July

She told me that last week. This is the one who lives below me and is on permanent disability. (yet somehow was out there shoveling the past couple of days while I had to pay someone to do it) She gets Social Security and also somehow her 18 year old son gets it too. I have no idea how because he isn't disabled. In any case the son's SS ends when he graduates high school in June.
She told me she lives on something like $2500/month. I don't even know how that is possible in a state like NJ. When his SS ends she will be living on like $1500. Well that is impossible because my rent here is $1550 and hers is even higher than mine because she is month-to-month rather than on an annual contract. She does work at Walmart (but is limited in how much she can earn) and occasionally does Instacart. Still she regularly asks her sister to send her $$ to pay bills.
So she will be leaving here in the coming months. She applied for some low-income housing a few towns away with cheaper rent but I still don't think that is going to be the solution. She said she is looking to quit Walmart. She was supportive of her son quitting his job. She said that she will have to put down her 13 year old yellow lab. I definitely don't understand some of her decisions but I will be sorry to see her go. She is the person who has the extra key here and who takes care of my cats when I'm in the hospital. I have other friends from the pool here who can do that for me. Still I'll miss her.

Her son may be receiving survivor's benefits, if his father passed. SS will pay those until a child is 18 and will also pay a surviving spouse.

I'm sorry that your friend is moving. Sounds like she has a rough row to hoe.

You might get a nice man who wants to go to the pool with you.
And look after the cat

The Social Security you're describing for the son is paid from the father's account as a surviving dependent. (Mom received Social Security for my brothers and I after dad passed away until we reached 18 years old. Mom got a separate check for each one of us and it was intended to buy food and clothing for us since dad passed away. Mom also got a check for herself from dad's social security as a dependent spouse.) If the mother is disabled, she could be drawing from her own Social Security.

Sounds like she has never made it up to saving anything or could not, Well she has nothing on me, I live from SS to SS and if the sons of my best friend did not put oup with me here I could not afford to go anywhere else, I am just glad to pay them my rent which include ulitilies and glad to be able to get food, Then add a little each moth from sites and surveys,

It’s sad that she is leaving ….hopefully you will still be able to see her if she isn’t too far away. It does sound as though the decisions she is making are a little strange …..

I am sure you will miss her a lot. But it does sound like she truly does need to be in low income housing. Her son, in the other hand, well…she seems to be an enabler. To encourage him not to work isn’t good. My sone here with me absolutely hates that he can’t work right now. I guess it takes all kinds.
