The affects of war. What to expect?

Many of us here on mylot have lived through at least one war. Some of us remember Vietnam, some will recall the Korean War, I think everyone on this site would remember Iraq, as it was 2003 to 2011. I was born after my Dad came home from Korea, I do remember the heartbreak of all the stories of wars fought by hearing of them from my grandfathers and my Dad. Our family lost several members during Vietnam, and one to Iraq.
Here we are again...no matter what is said, this is a war. How far it will go and how many countries will be torn to pieces remains to be seen, but the death toll has already started. War just doesn't affect the countries that are involved, war affects the entire world in some way or another. Loss of life, loss of ways of living or homes or most importantly, people. Crazy prices because that's what war does--it costs more to shift needed goods and services to other places, products are often hard or impossible to obtain, I could go on and on here, but I am sure we all know this.
Do you currently have someone in armed forces? Currently, my family only has two--one is a young cousin in the the army, and another is my nephew, who is in the Navy and currently on a carrier ship...'nuff said.
I have a hard time with war and conflict. It's hard to hear of it, and hard to watch--now more than ever, since there are more complicated weapons used, more threats, more ways exist to destroy than ever before. No one wants to lose loved ones or friends.
War doesn't bring happiness or glory. Just because it is not currently being fought here in the US, it could...I know I don't ever want that, either. No one does.

My father served 30 years in the Air Force and 18 months in Vietnam when I was a child. I have a cousin in the Air Force now and he is deployed to an unknown location. War is frightening and so very sad. I pray for the world and especially for those military and civilians in its path.

We had an air force base here for years, but it's closed now. They still have a landing strip and it seems to be used for training exercises, etc. now. There is still what is locally called ''the base'' and is used now as rentals. Back in the college days we lived not far from where I am now, the base was always packed and so active. it seems strange now not to see the military uniforms, etc.
Your Dad served a long time! As you said, war is frightening and sad, and it affects us all. I pray for them all, too.

My husband is a navy vet, and my late father fought in two wars that I can recall. Both before my birth. I have never known the front lines of war, but I do understand where you're coming from. It's senseless and I feel like it's never-ending. People will never get along.

@MarieCoyle Yeah, I know. I hear a lot of people who'll say 'thank you for your service' or George says it when he finds out someone was in the armed forceses, but half the time I wonder if most people fully understand what they're thanking our vets for.

Sometimes, I don't think some people appreciate the service that our armed forces provide, trying to keep us safe. And so many lives lost in each conflict.

War is always frightening and scary..both for those in it, and those left behind worrying. I have no members of the military amongst my family right now, but have had. I guess the only person I know of..is ShannyBananys stepson. Not sure where he is posted, hopefully not in the Middle East.

My nephew is in the Middle East now. Very concerning for all of our soldiers.

I only remember the Iraq war and Saddam Hussein. The economy was terrible then. My mom's cousin was assigned in Iran that time. He was part of the US army. His dad, my grandfather's brother was a veteran.

@MarieCoyle True. My friend's daughter and her boyfriend got stuck in Kuala Lumpur. Their scheduled flight back home to France got cancelled Friday evening because of the war. The rebooked Saturday evening but they weren't able to make it again because it was overbooked. I don't know how long they have to stay in KL.

I have a school friend who is stuck in Dubai at the airport, they have been there since Saturday morning. I hope your friends get a flight out of there very soon!

Yes, I have cousins who followed their parents into the military.
I’m sure there are plenty of people who wish Jimmy Carter had done this in 1980. That doesn’t make it right or legal (congressional approval is required for war).

@MarieCoyle — sometimes the same branch, too. Although my uncle was in the army and his son and grandsons are Navy.

I still don't know how any Congressional representatives can stand for it not to have gone through them first. I guess if your name is Trump, you just do whatever you want to do. Laws don't matter to him.
Funny how the military works. Many families have generations of soldiers.

My Dad was at the front during WW2, we are lucky enough not to have young men right now in our family, so no one will be sent to the Arabian Gulf to fight a war that only serve the purpose of two leaders to expand their territories and to become more rich. The populations who never got bombs on their heads cannot imagine the nightmare of living in a place where you have to hide in a shelter every few hours.

@MarieCoyle - We are very, very concerned. We do not need more radioactivity from nuclear plants. Of course from Iran we would get it here.

The way things are looking and from what I have watched on the news, this war will vastly affect us all, and of course, not in a good way. And you are right, it is a true nightmare.

I was a small child during the Vietnam war. I remember Iraq well. I agree, war upsets me. My son's best friend's brother is a Marine. He hasn't been in long but I am wondering if he will have to go over there.

I’ve thought about the draft. I hope it doesn’t reach the point that it has to be reinstated.

And this one has been started as a distraction only. And he is insane enough to escalate it further. Thankfully I have no one in the service at this time but feel deeply for those who do.

I know. And I have several friends and family members who live overseas, and another that has been stuck in an airport for several days, etc...what a mess.

I was a child during the Vietnam War. Right now I just want to finish up my life peacefully. If that is not possible, then I am ready to go to the other side,

The was in Vietnam technically started in 1955. When we became really actively involved, I was a young child as well. So many families were affected and lost loved ones.

No one serving now, but I worry about my 16 year old grandson possibly having to serve in the future.
My uncle was a career fighter pilot in the air force and Lt. Colonel. My father served in the Army, but received honorable discharge when a propeller he was working on cut his face and nose. That was thanks to a stupid pilot. Me uncle and brother-in-law also served.
I fear wars on so many levels. Wishing safety for your cousin and nephew.

@MarieCoyle The numbers are climbing for sure. I don’t know if they have an end plan or not!

This is a terrible situation for so many. I really feel for the Iranian citizens with some mourning the loss of their leader and the rest rejoicing. I fear it could tear their country apart. The conflict is affecting so many especially with the big airports under attack.

And it’s so incredibly sad that one person is at the root of all of this. Already many have been injured or killed.

I have not experienced war but I remember my late grandfather talking about the Second World War when Japan invaded the Philippines. My grandfather told us kids how they were hiding my mother and her sister underground covered with coconut and banana leaves. How he saw the Japanese soldiers killing children with their swords. As a kid I was horrified.

Oh, how terrible. Anyone would be horrified!! My grandfather’s were in WW1. Their stories were terrible as well. War…it’s never good.

It’s escalated quickly, is widespread, and it’s doubtful that it will end quickly. I do hope that I am wrong, but it doesn’t appear to be a three day war as was stated early Saturday morning.

I have a friend from high school in the Navy.
War doesn’t worry me too much as long as it’s going on somewhere else. But if things got nuclear, heck yeah I’d be scared.
That move The Day After, one of my personal faves.. it shows exactly what it would be like.
NOT The Day After Tomorrow, that movie kinda sucks.
The Day After.
