Limits on fishing in Western Australia

Just a few weeks ago, due to over-fishing and conservation concerns, the West Australian government placed a ban on some types of fishing. They deem this is necessary as stocks of some fish varieties are being threatened. The ban was placed with very little notice causing a lot of uproar in those associated with both commercial and domestic fishing. We have friends who run a caravan park and they rely on fisherfolk for their income. Following the ban, thousands of dollars’ worth of bookings were cancelled. Shops stocking fishing supplies are also feeling the pinch. Dhufish, groper and pink snapper are some of the species that now have protection in the hope that this will allow numbers to increase. All this is really to pad out a little information on the barramundi fish species which don’t seem to be well known to most myLotters. Barramundi live in both salt and fresh water, and are highly valued for their mild, flaky flesh. It’s a very common offering in restaurants and cafes. The photo is mine.

I think that was a wise move on the part of your government, over fishing could easily cause extinction of some species if we're not careful. I wish all governments would ban the slaughter of apex predators like wolves and dolphins.

So true. I've seen a few articles about some countries banning whale and dolphin hunting, I just pray many more governments do the same. People can learn new trades that won't involve slaughtering what little wildlife we have left.

Well, yeah, they have to make sure there are plenty of fish for the kangaroos to eat.

It’s always a good idea to prevent overfishing. Sorry if the ban affects your friends.

The fisherfolk were given very little warning which has been part of the problem but bans were never going to be very welcome.

I think it was supermarket chain, Waitrose, who stopped selling mackeral as it was being over fished. No one else or the Government have done anything similar

Wow, that's quite amazing for a company to do this. Good for them.

It would be good if it could be a short-term thing.

You should be able to post your picture now. I remember seeing Barramundi in expensive restaurants in movies. I'm sorry the fishing industry is taking such a hit.

You got it in one! Can you buy it there?

@JudyEv Yes we can but it here as Barramundi is available in the UK through various online fishmongers, where it can be purchased fresh or frozen. It is popular for its mild flavor and flaky texture, making it a great alternative to other white fish like cod.
