Free films once a week

I thought I’d write about the film nights we have each week in our retirement village. We have a social committee which does a great job in providing entertainment for us. There is usually a major event each month but every Tuesday there is a free film put on in the clubhouse for us to enjoy. We meet at 6.30pm for a chat and most of us have drinks with us. The movie starts at 7pm and it’s all over by about 9pm. Ourselves and two other couples take it in turn to go to each other’s houses. We finish off our bottle of wine, have a few nibbles and a lot more chat and laughter, and usually end with a glass of Bailey’s Irish Cream. It would be nice to share the ‘afters’ with others but our lounges are only large enough for about six people. The photo is mine and shows the clubhouse set up for a Christmas function. At the top left of the room is another smaller room with a biggish screen and room for perhaps 40 people.

I think your retirement village is a place Yvonne and I would like. I wouldn't mind the odd social event with like minded people Baileys Irish Cream. Sounds good to me Judy

There are 157 houses in the complex but mostly only 8-12 at the movies but that's okay. People can join in or not as much as they like. No-one bothers you to do this or that.

@Ineeddentures Quite a few of the houses have single people. The most we get at the really popular things is about 120-130. Soup night is very popular as is the Christmas dinner and Melbourne Cup Day. The last bus trip only had 28 people participating. The cost was $80 - $50 for the meal and $30 for the bus so the cost can put off a lot of people.

@JudyEv I noticed how much the price of the houses has gone up in the past few years. I am sure you are very happy that you sold your house and moved there.

We do feel lucky to be here. It's a very desirable place for many older people. A house has just come up for sale and prices have increased about 40% from when we bought ours.

@LadyDuck The boys will benefit when we go but we're trying to help our Melbourne son into a house and prices just keep rising.

And free - don't forget free! And the lovely lady who runs the films and runs the social committee sometimes treats us to drumsticks (ice-cream) halfway through the movie. They would be left over from some other social function.

@Ronrybs They do indeed. We have another free film once a month but I can make a discussion about it. I run out of ideas a bit now we're not travelling so much.

That sounds like a really nice weekly activity. It’s great that your social committee is active and organizes things like that for everyone to enjoy. I also like that you continue the evening with friends afterwards. Those simple gatherings with good conversation and laughter are always the best.

We've seen some really enjoyable films. One lady seems to collect them like others collect books or stamps so she has dozens to choose from.
