Vince went to a new barber the other day and was attended to by a young apprentice who had a huge mop of dark, curly hair so quite a contrast to Vince’s sparse white hair. They chatted about various things before Vince asked him his age. He was 19. When he learnt that Vince was heading for 79, he nearly fell over. I can only think that he didn’t know too many older people as he said to Vince ‘ Doesn’t it hurt?’ Then he said ‘What about your wife? Is she still alive?’ Perhaps next time he goes there, the young man will be surprised to see he is still alive. The photo is an AI version of Vince. I think he gave it a few clues and it did the rest.

As soon as I noticed the photo I thought that it's Vince in the picture. I like this AI version. My goodness that young people had an exciting day meeting such an "old man".

He asked for a 'Grumpy' version but I can't find it at the moment.

@LadyDuck I think he thought it would be funny. I'll have to ask him for a copy of it.

That is too funny! It's a good picture of Vince, though. IF I didn't know Vince is losing his hair.

The AI version makes Vince look quite smart! May be he would say "Am I not smart enough?" The Young apprentice surely had a lot of questions. Not sure if he was delighted to know the facts or simply surprised. Yet this is life and well, sometimes one comes face to face with such situations.

He may not expect Vince to show up again, being as he's so old.

AI has done a great job of this, even if it has given him a bit more hair.

I am sure that when I was younger there didn't seem to be that many older people about, but now we are all living longer. Still, doesn't explain the barber's bewilderment

I'm guessing he doesn't have grandparents here and hasn't had much contact with older people. You'd think that some would need haircuts but perhaps he thinks they're all 60-ish.

@Ronrybs True. And here, being completely bald is pretty fashionable. I guess many of those men shave their own heads so don't need to go to a barber.

What about your wife? Is she still alive?’ Lol Vince has got a veritable mop compared to me Judy I'm just wondering if the young apprentice barber might have been trying to be sarcastic or something. I've noticed older people getting a lot of sarcastic back chat from young people of late

I think Vince would have recognised sarcasm. He liked the young guy and intends going back next time.

It's quite flattering, isn't it? He hasn't got quite this much hair in real life.

Usually at that age the parents are still in their 30's or 40's that's why he said that. Maybe he thinks that 79 is already ancient.

LOL, yeah, well old folks are still doing well to be so old. My brother said that when he was six (the year I was born), he was worried our dad was going to die because he was turning 30. How we learn, huh?! I like that AI!

And when Mumm turned 60, I thought 'people die at 60', we'd better make sure we don't miss another Christmas with her and Dad'. Forty-four years later she eventually passed away!

I like that version. That young man should have been better educated by his parents that people age but it does not mean they cannot function. I wonder how old his parents are.

They could be in their late 30s/early 40s. Maybe he doesn't have living grandparents.

What a cool AI version of Vince! Love it! I can’t believe the questions and mainly ignorance of this 19 year old. I hope he helped Vince to the door

When I was ten, twenty was pretty old, then at twenty, forty was old. Now when people say they are seventy, I say they are not old, still young! I find a few young trying to avoid me as they think we may not have much to talk!

That’s such a funny exchange, and I love the idea that the young barber got a gentle reminder that 79 certainly doesn’t mean “ready to fall apart” just yet!

Funny, because part of me will say that some of the aging factors do hurt somewhat. But it is so gradual that not necessarily noticeable. I feel that this young man has lead a very sheltered life not to ever encounter someone of Vince's age. Of course by the time that I was that age, I had already known older aged people, I volunteered at the hospital on a floor that was set aside for those waiting for a bed to a long term care facility. And my own grandparents were in their 80's and I even know some of their friends, and others in the community on neighbouring farms who were in their 80's as well.

If I think about it, I don't find it too unusual that a young person may not know too many (much) older people.

That's a very jolly picture That hairdresser reminds me of an incident years ago... I was working in the lab and we had a student doing work experience. We were just chatting and he was saying something about his mother (complaining probably ) and I said something similar about mine and he looked taken-aback and said "I didn't know people your age had mothers!" He was about 16 I was about 22
