I Have a Question --

I remember how my mother was when I was young. Very overprotective and domineering. I hated it. I wondered what type of parent I would be. Not extreme, that's for sure. I knew my mother loved me and that is always important. I pushed my daughter to not be shy. I was so pitifully shy, and I didn't want her to be. Yet I feel that I let her make her own mistakes and wasn't overprotective. I think that is important so that a child is not dependent and are able to become self-reliant. What type of parent would you want to be? What type were you?

I was forced to be a hovering parent. Any time I tried to give Pretty choices on things or what to do, her mom took me to court again and again and again. *sigh* The judge finally made her mom stop when Pretty was a teenager but she was already set in her ways by that time. I'm glad she's as independent as she is but wish she wasn't as shy as she is, too.

Independence is a good quality I think. I pushed for my daughter not to be shy. I knew how it affected me.

@celticeagle Pretty still won't talk on the phone unless it's an emergency.

I wouldn't have made a good parent. One of the reasons I chose not to have children. I probably would have been very strict.

My mother was quite strict and was someone you could never talk to like a friend. I wanted my son to be able to talk to me and open up to me when things are bad. So I played with him, talked to him about the things he enjoy and I love that we share those things that I was never able to do with my mom.

I think that is the way parents should be. Open and honest.

It's important for kids to be self-reliant. Being painfully shy isn't fun for anyone.

No, it isn't. Self-reliant is important I think.

Never was a parent; just had stepchildren, but they did not live with us.
