Resile - a new word for me

The leader of Australia’s National party has resigned and some, not all, are agog waiting to find out who the new leader will be. Why I’m writing about it is because the word ‘resile’ came up in the article and I quote: It is understood Mr Hogan urged Mr Littleproud to reconsider, but he did not resile from the decision. ‘Resile’ means to abandon a position or course of action. I wonder if it will become the new buzz word for journalists. In other news, another two Iranian women soccer players have been granted asylum in Australia. The photo is mine.

That is a word we know and use in Italy, from Latin resilire.

@JudyEv So many English words have Latin origins, this is why I am very happy that I learnt Latin in school.

Really? That's interesting. Words can have very different origins.

I love picking up new words like this. It is very generous that the women soccer players have asylum in your country.

@JudyEv We have international students at the university here in the city, and some of them were interviewed on the news last evening, and two of them stated that if they go back home they will be executed. And yet, as young students, they do not have the money to stay here.

Another two asked for asylum but now one has changed her mind. I just hope they'll be okay when they get back to Iran.

If they use it more and more, I'll have to try to remember what it means.

Good for you, mate. You don't hear 'vestibule' too often nowadays either.

When it's such an unusual word, you have to wonder where the journalists came across it.

The news about granting asylum caught my interest more. I guess I just want to hear more news about good things.

@judyev I wonder if Mr Littleproud knew he wasn’t going to resile at Mr Hogan’s behest.

Not a common word for sure. It is so tough to abandon one's country unless pushed to it by circumstances beyond their control. A bold step by them, and also kudos to Australia welcoming them in their hour of need.

It's a beautiful rock formation. I'd never heard/read the word "resile" before and my laptop didn't know the word when I added it to my online dictionary, either. Pretty soon you might have a new soccer team.

Yes, I know what resile means. I understood it to mean to spring back or change your mind from a decision as in this instance.
