Have you ever been homeless

March 11, 2026 9:10pm CST
Have you ever been homeless It's a horrible place to be, however you get to that point By the time you are homeless, it don't matter much how you got there So when people start the " it's their own fault" stuff, it really isn't helpful I was homeless, I was lucky, I had this thing for the great outdoors So I bought a tent Camped near a beach beside a fruit farm. Got a casual job picking fruit and stayed in my tent for almost 5 months, and then got an empty old cottage on the farm to stay on as I worked on after the fruit season had finished I earned a fair bit of money, no bills to pay,, taxes, rent, energy etc Worked hard, long hours Made homelessness work for me No moral or anything to this Just try and be a bit kinder in attitude to homeless people That will help them quite a lot

Well I camped beside a beach , in between a sand dune and some gorse bushes Plenty shelter from wind and wet. It was April I started and at night it could still get below freezing quite often, Bit then it was summer

@Ineeddentures - A smile costs nothing and you can also give them something that you do not need but it's precious for them. A warm blanket, a sweater, a pair of pants.

@LadyDuck Exactly But the best gift of all is a hot cup of coffee and a pastry. I would have liked that but I wasn't camped near coffee or pastries sadly

That but for the grace of whoever goes our 54-year-old son and he's not out of the woods yet. Unfornately he doesn't like camping! lol We are trying to help him get his own place so at least he won't be turfed out on the street. In many cases, it is not the fault of the person involved. We hear story after story on the news about how difficult life is for some people.

@Ineeddentures It's very difficult and prices seem to go up $10,000 a month. We bought here five years ago and the last house to sell in the village went for about 40% more than what we paid. And they're all basically the same. The boys will benefit when we go so at least that's something unless prices plummet.

@JudyEv I imagine they will be knocking on 70 at least before you go lol

It must be quite a worry for you and Vince We don't want to be seeing our kids struggle and not have a home to call their own I recall you mentioned this a while back Is it difficult to get housing there?

I was homeless with my children and my soon to be ex husband. We lived in a motel room, and survived there by the day-barely. I picked up receipts from the store parking lot, used Fetch rewards just so we could eat each day. I wouldn't wish that on ANYONE. My heart breaks for anyone who has experienced this.

@Ineeddentures It was extremely difficult. With Fetch rewards you earn points for receipts, then it gives you gift cards for Walmart--which is where we would buy things to microwave or sandwich stuff for meals. It was the hardest time in our lives. I agree, it definitely shouldn't exist in this country. =(

It was clearly harder for you than it was for me It must be really heartbreaking when children are part of the equation I don't understand stand how picking up receipts helps, I stole food for the first few days when money was tight No family should have to experience homelessness, Especially in countries like ours where there is great wealth

It was a long long long time ago It wasn't a hardship I think because I had a liking for the great outdoors, and had grown up on farms, the plan was easy to formulate.

I haven't been, but one of my old friends from school has been living in a shelter, and it sounds very dangerous and depressing. I'm glad you found some work and could improve your surroundings a bit. Sounds like a simple but good life!

@Ineeddentures there's a lot who came by at our store. Some is just a passerby other's becomes regular. And sometimes they offer help in return for the free food. Which we feel grateful as well especially when we really need a hand sometimes. There help is fairly compensated just like our regular employee.

When I was in Mexico for 8 months we mostly stayed with my Ex's family, but we stayed with a family and built a room addition for them, then a friend let us stay in a corrigated hut that actually looked like a little house. Dirt floor, no running water or electricity. Had a gas stove and a refrigerator that of course didn't work, but good for storing food. Had to go across the street to use the bathroom. Walked to the little store on the other side of the small mountain every day to get food for dinner. We could get water from the people across the street M-W-F, and next door on Tu-Thu-and Sat. No one in the are got water on Sunday. Had containers to keep water in. It was trying at times, but I love a Challenge...Well, back then I did. That was 35 years ago. Couldn't do that today. That is as close to homeless that I have been.
